Prolapsed vent. I've had several girls have this. Try to gently clean the area. If you can, hold her under a faucet (with warm water!!!!) and let it run over her vent to soften everything. Gently wipe off or slowly pull off any poo or debris. Let the warm water continue to cleanse the area...
Speckledhen,
I'm so sorry about your chickens. We had to put down a girl not long ago for what I'm guessing was the same thing. We have another girl who's belly is quite squishy and soft. I don't think she is laying. She doesn't seem to want to stand up much. Anyway, my question for you is...
The funny thing is, we do have a roo. He's a banty and she's a standard. We have had Cosmo (the roo) for about 2 years. Clem, the hen in question, has always been somewhere in the middle of the pecking order. 16 chickens total.
I think this is happening to one of our hens. She's 3. She hasn't been laying lately. In fact, we thought she may be eggbound. She's been acting strange. I saw her mount one of our other hens. Well, last night, I noticed that she's suddenly growing spurs. I'm going to watch her more...
We have moved broodies a few times. Sometimes it takes them a day or so to get used to the new nest. Most of them time they'll settle down before too long.
We have 3 broody banties right now. Unfortunately, we don't have room for more chickens. Otherwise, we'd have eggs under all of them. The little boogers are taking up half of our nesting boxes. The other hens don't appreciate it. Found 7 eggs frozen under the riding mower the other day...
All of our girls ( see my sig.) are back to full production after a very dry spell due to molting. Even the OEG bantams are popping out an egg every other day! The cold has not phased them at all.
Our Roo Cosmo Seems to be a quiet little guy. He always has his morning and evening crows with a few throughout the day. Some days more than others but he is not too loud. My guess is that the amount and volume of crowing will vary bird to bird? Hopefully someone with more OEGB experience will...
We hatched eggs from our OEG bantams and it was a great experience. We had the egg donor go broody on one egg a week after we started incubating. She made it look so easy! We spend all that time worrying about the temp. and humidity while she sits outside (in the coop) and then pop Amazing!!!!
We have an Italian Greyhound that cleans up after the chickens and will keep a litter box clean if she can get to it. She even trys to sneak up behind our lab when we are not looking. She is 11 yrs old and has 1 tooth in her mouth. I think she lives off of poo!
We had a broody that i moved by sliding some stiff cardboard under her and the nest and then sliding the whole thing out (supporting the bottom with a hand) and placing it into a dog crate with all of the stuff she needed. The front lip of our nesting boxes comes off easily so we could just...
We have had our adult girls eat smaller snakes and harass some that were too large to eat. I vote for Delawares as a great breed, ours are friendly and quite hilarious to watch.
