FarmeRoach

It all started with a baby pigeon... Birdie was introduced to me as a someone who needed a new mom. When he fell out of his nest, he broke some bones in his face, resulting in surgery and a crooked beak. For the next several months, my scheduled revolved around three feeding times a day. Eventually, after much following around Capellus (my 6 year old pupppy), he began eating dog food on his own and refused to be fed like a baby anymore. Birdie is now going on two years old and has himself a mate and a nest where we find eggs from time to time. Before birdie, I did not like the idea of having birds, now I am quite in those with this kind of animal, And since I needed to build a coop to get birdie and LB (lady bird) out of the house.. a new desire was formed.. having pet chickens. Bonus : never having to put eggs on the grocery list! My husband and I built a coop and a lovely yard, almost completely out of recycled materials. I brought home my first group of ladies, each just a couple days old.. Mila (Wyandotte) the pack leader. Molly (Buff Orpington) the hunter, never sharing her bugs though. Lola (australorp) could always be found laying in the sun or sizing herself up to Bailey (Barred Rock) who always had some much energy, she never walked anywhere. I even had a couple musovies Averie and Meredith.. it was quite tickling to see my pigeons and ducks bathing together. Unfortunately, the day they turned 2 months, I went out around noon to do a check and found that the neighbors dog had broke in their yard and killed them all.. even found him with Lola in his mouth. I thought I could never love a chicken again.. But then came a reinforced coop and chicken yard, plus a privacy fence around my back yard and six new ladies, all around a month old.. Joan, Sage, Red, the others are awaiting names as they joined the family a week ago. And due to sickness, I found this lovely community. This is my chicken story so far.
