Surely, no hen can outsmart an aggregation of hungry Aedes? They can eat a few, but the insects take revenge when the coop is sleeping

Black Soldier Flies - THEY CAME!

Good, if they outcompete the other flies then they have "sorted" themselves by species quite neatly.

Black Soldier Flies - THEY CAME!

Here's a tip Some insects stay close to their preferred microhabitats. They can escape detection for years, but once you find them there are immense populations. I wonder if anyone has developed a method to only lure in black soldiers and not other flies. It would sort of be like separating...

Mostly blind hen with other issues

Keep in mind that my buff orp is not nice to hens lower in the pecking order. Of course, it (like all the others) will come running when I walk around with treats and tolerates being touched, but buff orpingtons do not seem to think people are chickens.

Quotes and Thoughts for the Day

Here's an unusual one I thought up: If money grew on trees, sparrows would be covered with $-marks as camouflage and specialized caterpillars would be eagerly gnawing away at dollar bills; weedy plants with coin-mimicking seedpods would fool unsuspecting humans into spreading their seeds, and...

Well, the other user said "not sure if marshmallows and almonds look gross"... I was providing a counterargument.

    Weevil Infested Pig Feed

Um, er, I heard that insect-infested feed was bad for them somewhere (not sure), even if they do eat beetles and worms in the garden. I think it could have something to do with the insect "waste products" and dead bodies. For those with grainpests in the house: Traps cannot end the problem...

Effectvie product to control cockroach population, specially surinam cockroach.

No, the worms are not young roaches. Young roaches simply look like small versions of old roaches. Wikipedia says that the roaches transmit the worms the same way mosquitoes transmit malaria and other diseases. In fact, I know people that keep surinams as pets, and I imagine they would make...

Effectvie product to control cockroach population, specially surinam cockroach.

Are you comfortable telling us what region (or at least climate) you live in? Surinams are not the worst pest roaches due to their environment preferences. Maybe convince dad to replace leaflitter with some sort of other plant-helping mechanism that doesn't provide insect habitat to at least...

    A special case of slow-roasting

No, not the coop. I will try to freeze an entire watermelon rind sooner or later, but I am a bit worried that they will bring chunks of the dirty floor into their cold bath. Some of them might be heat tolerant, but not all, since they are all different. (erp, a smelly bath is not very pleasing...

7 birds, run (not sure exactly how big, but it is enormous), and since it is a run there is unlimited ventilation

    Killer chickens?

Chickens can attack each other ferociously if their sizes are too disparate, but since they are all the same age such bullying is less likely.

    A special case of slow-roasting

Yes, I did read a few articles on chicken cooling and I know there are other cooling threads, but the floor-cleaning is, um, overdue. I fed them some frozen mixed vegs as ice cream, but it probably isn't enough even with a giant shade tree because the air itself is hot and wet. Any tips on...
