Product is well made, but when the chickens scratch they tend to fill the cups up with dirt and then they wont drink from them. Plus they clog easily. They'll be great in a tractor or something without a dirt floor. They also require a pressure regulator that will reduce the pressure to around 2...
Do you have any pics ? I recently had a chick hatch out with a malformed knee joint. The other worled fine, but if I were to gently stretch its other one out, it would "lock" halfway. I ultimately had to cull it. Tough to do, but more cruel to let live. In my opinion. I would keep an eye out for...
You have the right idea, but the wrong angle. Your storage bin won't hold temperature for very long, which will result in rapid cycling of your heat source. Try using either an ice chest or styrofoam cooler. The insulating properties of these works perfecly for this.
Here's a video that explains...
I had a hen like this about a month ago. We ended up figuring she contracted blackhead. She had the same symptoms as your hen except she had sulfur yellow diarrhea. She would drink very little, but not eat.She never got better. We had to euthanize her. Is it rainy where you are ? Or has it been...
The best way to tell male from female on day old chicks is to look at their wings. They will both have a very distict difference in their flight feathers, the feathers on the wings about half way from the wing tip to the body. A males flight feathers will all be the same length and a females...
If it really gets bad, ( like if blood gets drawn ), you can get pine tar at TSC and put it on the bleeding areas. What this will do it protect the open wounds from infection and if that hens pecks her there again it will "glue" her mouth shut temporarily and she'll quit.
Sometimes if you don't keep a rooster in the flock, the alpha hens will try a half hearted crow to establish her position in the pecking order. If you get a rooster in the flock she will most likely quit. Plus, a roster in the flock adds to a better flow to the pecking order and all the girls...
I also have two outside cats thst do the same, but what I don't like is they kill the good snakes too. We have King snakes here in southern Alabama and they're good for keeping away the rattlers. I guess I'll take the good with the bad.
I'm glad to hear you got it up to temp. I've never really liked those little bators. I have two of tbem and they almost always fail me at the worst possible time, as it did you. That's why I had to build me one. It's one of those styrofoam ice chest types, but its highly reliable. I have 3 dozen...
