    Frostbite and extreme cold

Next up is some lighting. We will be doing similar but using the red light. It's bolted to the ceiling too, and then a secondary chain is up. Boyfriend did what he could to ensure safety and set my mind at ease. It'll only be turned on with temps reaching -20 Celsius or colder

extreme cold and ventilation - I think I know where we messed up.

He's a carpenter so I got lucky there! I might just lock them in their coop when it gets super cold We've decided to add heat from here on out when it dips below -20. It seems to be what others do in our climate. Our ameraucana is doing great. The Wyandotte hens and our fella who's comb hasn't...

    Frostbite and extreme cold

Hey there! We've been dealing with temperatures ranging from -25 to -40 here in Central British Columbia. It's mostly cold like this at night. Boyfriend thought closing the coop ventilation would be a good idea so he did that and I finally let it go and let him. We ended up with frost on the...

It's out now! Still have three birds with frostbite and really unsure how to treat it with how dang cold it is here. It'll be a shock to them to go from inside to back outside at these temps 😫

So my coop in summer is in the photograph. Ventilation is well above the top of the chickens heads. We've been having temperatures ranging from -20 to -40 Celsius for the past two weeks. During the -35 weather my boyfriend was insistent on covering the vents with some thick cotton. We have a...

Frostbite, vent gleet, curly toes, and molt

Thank you all! I was navigating between feeling certainty that culling was best and then feeling like "what if I'm wrong?" - I appreciate the affirmation that my instincts were right. Here's a photo of Gimble during better times, because I just think it'll be nice for her to be remembered that...

Frostbite, vent gleet, curly toes, and molt

Thank you a bunch for your input. Of course the one we loved most and only one we named is the one who's going to be my first cull. 😧

How do you think it got so bad so quickly? I'd love to prevent anything like this in the future

Frostbite, vent gleet, curly toes, and molt

Is the infection you're seeing on her tummy? That's terrible because we have no access to vet care here and no way of getting chicken - specific medications.

Frostbite, vent gleet, curly toes, and molt

So some backstory. My blue wheaten ameraucana chickens name is Gimble. Gimble has curly toe paralysis. We live in Northern BC. It's actually been super mild so far, with temps right at freezing. So my girls have been moulting for a good month and a half while Gimble just started about a week...
