    Wintering chickens over garden

I was thinking of wintering my chickens over my garden space. The garden will be tilled and a compost layer added in the spring. Will the manure be too hot for my garden in the spring. Also, I have an asparagus patch in my garden . Can chickens be run over that area in the winter?

Culling - Break Neck Method - BEWARE - NOT A PC JOKE - NOT KIDDING

I have often thought that butchering chickens has " changed" me, so I can understand the PTSD thing. You need a very sharp filet knife when you cut off the head so there is no sawing. Drop the head immediately in a bucket and don't look at it. I can get through regular chickens necks with a...

    turkey butchering questions

My husband shot this one with a .22. Then we hoisted him in a tree and bled him. His neck was so thick tha I didn't want to risk an axe blow. He dressed out at 42 lbs. Scaulding was done in a big Rubbermaid tub.

Cornish X with crooked neck and droopy eye?

Sounds like a neurological injury and shouldn't affect the meat. I butchered a Cornish X that had a large red swelling at his rear end. I found that he had suffered a severe injury at some point and his entire abdominal wall had herniated. The red swelling was his intestines! His gizzard was...

    Turkey eggs!

I spared my 7 month old bronze turkey hen the axe a couple weekends ago when I butchered our last tom. A few days ago she started laying eggs. The variety is beautiful! Are turkey eggs good to eat? How long and how often can I expect her to lay?

    When to butcher?

My method is to place in a cone and use a very sharp filet knife to quickly cut off the head. It is easier than looking around for the area to cut an artery. I can literally have the head off in 1 second...instant death. You do have to settle your nerves, pull down slightly on the neck and make...

Just butchered my BBW tom that I received in my surprise in early March. Dressed out he weighed 42 POUNDS! He will have to be parted out as I don't think my oven would be big enough for this big boy.

    Weird find after slaughter

I butchered 14 Cornish X chickens last weekend. We had noticed weeks ago that one cockerel had a large pinkish swelling at his rear end. Not knowing what this was, I butchered him last, which happens to have been in the dark with a porch light.....yeah, I was desperate to finish these birds up...

    Murray Mcmurray!

I just received my order from MM this morning. 7 Turkens, 8 EE and a mystery chick. One of the chicks, I am assuming it is an EE, arrived completely spradle-legged. Another chick is either deformed or for some reason has an open wound on the side of its head. I can't see the eye on that side and...

Cackle hatchery's Hatchery Surprise- Anybody got this before?

I got my surprise in March. I was fascinated by this video. . So I bought an ancient construction trailer and I am transforming it into the coupe de trailer, lol. There are 2 rooms in it. A feed room and living area. I have put in extra windows and a solar automatic coop door opener. The next...
