I'm 1630 posts behind, oh well.
The hatch was not good. Got 4 live chicks out of it, they all hatched from eggs that were side by side the last week on one side of the bator , whereas the bulk of the eggs (on the opposite side) did not hatch except 1 that was a cull. So I'd say the old LG is...
Having had both the pigs take a lot more in terms of space, & fencing. If you have never had any livestock larger than chickens then move up to Turkey first is your safe bet.
That said we are expecting pigglets in Feb from our gilt (first litter female pig). Feb is a horrible time for pigglets...
Ron or others w/ loads of experience here is my problem--
Humidity way too much, in the air (outdoors has literally been 100%, indoors 60-70%). Never added any water to the bator at all!
I just finished this early hatch 7/64 2 of those w/ help & the worst of it is I had about another 6 that...
I might try that next time just for the heck of it, I almost always get fewer pullets so I'm up for any old farm's wives tails as to how to fix that.
Awwww, you got double cuteness.
How many layers do you have?
I gotta get myself a real egg collection basket like you have, I mean after about 12yrs of poultry keeping its likely I'd actually USE it ah, daily so maybe I should treat myself, you think?!!
Meanwhile,
hatched today, hopefully all pullets (BYM from 3 flocks)
I have 6 early chicks hatched & in the bator now (still aren't even due for another 2.5 hrs) but the slightly early chicks are always more robust for me, so I'm good w/ these, although setting up the brooder just now was kinda a shocker, esp. as we have now switched over to snow/sleet outside...
Here is the 1 from a brown egg of yours which I think is either half or pure Astrolorp (the other 3 from your eggs don't look a thing like it btw)
What do you think ;?
These are BYM from the same 3 flocks (including my own) which I have set for NYD HAL .
At this moment 6 have hatched.
5 brown eggs (4 of those being possibly part or all Astrolorp <-- anyone know what those look like when they hatch??)
1 blue egg, from my flock, most likely a pure CCL under a...
My early batch which started to pip last night had 2 hatch totally around dawn & 2 more just now.
I still have not added a drop of water b/c the humidity here is like being underwater, we apparently got another 4 inches rain overnight.
The bath towles smell musty, the windows (of the house on...
Oh, trying to ID the chicks which hatch is going to be great good fun, I think between the 3 flocks there are about 20 different breeds!
&
I HAVE A PIP -- No not the NYD HAL batch, the I couldn't wait & had the new bator hot for duck eggs I didn't get batch!
so this pip is about 24 hrs ahead...
HaHa -- maybe some of the brown eggs from you are Australorp X eggs (is that a possibility?)
In the NYD HAL Bator -- Last night there were 16eggs that I saw movement in, there are 14 more but those were too dark or just didn't happen to be active when I looked.
My vote for most likely to...
You know I read that article a while back & I don't really see Welsummers as the best ZA breed. My understanding is (at least the current stock available) doesn't really lay all that well. Anyone w/ Welsummers care to give your opinion on them vs other breeds?
Or anybody want to put forward a...
In my ancient still air LG 9200 when I wasn't moving eggs around I've had as much as 5 days between 1st hatcher(early) & last hatcher (way late, difficulty hatching) on the same set batch of eggs. So it is _possible_. It is also possible as you say, a dead egg w/ movement caused by your sloshing...
@ robgray
That is what I wondered when I saw the pictures.
I had a large # like that my first several hatches. I found out later that the (3) thermometers I was using were all reading low, so that caused several things, like the air cells didn't get big enough (half of the ones I opened died...
