Electric fencing, do you really need it vs non electric fencing

My girls (6) live in an enclosed 10x20 roofed enclosure with a free standing coop on the inside. I would love to allow them to free range. A electrified fence partially provides security on one side of a fenced in yard. The property adjacent to the run is largely sage and desert plants So I’m...

broken beak!! bleeding and lots of it

Bleeding in Sedona.....My Barred Plymouth Rock is broody and has been sitting on one of the three nesting boxes for the last two weeks so I decided to keep her out of the nest. I constructed a 1/4 inch wire enclosure covered with an unsecured plastic top. She (Lucy) was very angry that I put her...

Are first eggs ok to eat? And how to tell who lays?

One or two of our six hens laid their first eggs yesterday. Let’s see what each egg may have cost. Two years of work constructing a 10x20, roofed, triple fenced run, constructed a free standing coop on the interior, added a mister under the roof line for those hot Arizona days, electricity to...

Chickens won't go in coop at night!!!

My ladies are 110 days old. They’ve been in their 10x20 roofed enclosed run for two months. An interior coop with an automatic door closes at sunset. A light bulb on a timer is set to go on an hour before sunset and off an hour afterwards. Some days all six go in. Some nights only two or three...

Adult chickens suddenly stopped going in coop at night!

Thank you...I’m not sure how to reset the door as the sensor is triggered by sundown. I’ll check with the manufacturer.

Adult chickens suddenly stopped going in coop at night!

My girls are 11 weeks old and reside in a 10x20 run in which a stand alone coop with a roost is situated. An automatic door has been installed with a light inside the coop on a timer that turns on an hour before dark. For a few days they, on their on, entered their coop, but now I’m finding some...

Hi, I'm a new member and I need some advice.

I highly recommend that you purchase some 1/4 inch wire fabric (ACE Hardware in 50 foot rolls). First dig a trench about eight inches deep all around the run. Then lay it out on all sides of your run. Fold it so that 3/4 of the wire extends up the outside of the existing chicken wire and 1/4 of...

Chicken (run) enclosure and coop...The Chickmahjal

We started with an existing 10x20 chainlink dog run complete with a water and electrical source. I dug out the interior and trenched the perimeter adding 1/4 inch wire fabric to prevent critters from burrowing up under the run. The wire was then laid over the chainlink for added security. The...

    Arizona Chickens

Hello to my fellow Arizonians. We live just south of Sedona in The Village of Oak Creek. Two years ago we started remodeling a former chainlink 10 x 20 dog run. Thanks to websites and suggestions from Backyard Chicken subscribers the run an interior coop has been completed. Additionally a 10 X...

    Greetings from Sedona, Arizona

Thanks...You're right! I did wrap 1/4 inch wire fabric up the exterior about 24 inches. There are two layers over the chain link and include the 1/4 inch wire fabric and chicken wire which goes all the way around the exterior of the run.

    Greetings from Sedona, Arizona

I visited your website and enjoyed the visit immensely. 40 years ago I acquired a pen pal from Tennant Creek/Alice Springs region of Australia. Alan wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Fire Department seeking a pen pal. We communicated for years until he suffered a illness similar to...

    Greetings from Sedona, Arizona

Let me introduce myself. I am a retired Los Angeles County Fire Captain now living in the Village of Oak Creek near Sedona, AZ. We live in a rural area along with some great neighbors. Some of them have had chickens but gave up due to the predators, e.g., coyotes, bob cats, hawks etc. It was...
