Update post
She's back with the flock. She spent 3 nights in the garage. Got a couple Epsom salt soaks. Applied miconazole the first night only and coconut oil the following nights. The crusties came off and it stopped oozing and then the prolapse went back into place.
Never got pics but...
Hi all
Seems like I'm always on here asking questions.
I have a hen who appears to have vent gleet. She's got crusty white stuff around her vent that doesn't smell great. Tried an Epsom salt soak last night and this morning and it didn't help much but did remove the looser bits.
She also...
Not at all!
Mine just started laying maybe 2ish weeks ago, and I've kept them on the starter (28%). I occasionally mix in a 20% chick starter. And I have free choice calcium available. They all seem to be laying an egg a day. But I'm sure all of these wonderful folks with more quail experience...
Got it! Add new ones at night just like chickens.
Do you have any pro tips for the aviary? I am concerned about the egg collection situation.
Ah that's a bummer! I'm going to keep a few cages for younger, smaller birds until I have multiple aviaries. That's the plan at least. Luckily I'm in...
Got it. Thank you!
Turns out my vent sexing on the jumbo whites may have been wrong. I kept what I thought was the least aggressive male...and found 7 eggs today 🧐
Hi all,
New to quail. I currently have 2 groups in my garage in wire cages, but I want to get them outside in an aviary. Looking at starting with a 4'x8' aviary (6' tall).
One of my groups is 5 females and 1 male jumbo whites. They're about 9-10 weeks old.
The other group is 4 females and...
It did get pretty hot around the time the slowdown started, but it was this hot last year too and it didn't happen. Maybe because the hens are a year older now its affecting them more?
Interestingly enough, they've picked up by 1-2 eggs/day. I have pullets I've been letting out to free range...
They were on a 16-17% depending on if it was summer or winter.
Two of the ones currently laying poorly were also laying poorly before the switch.
Also worth noting. I checked for mites/lice on about half of them last night and they didn't seem to have any. I'm considering maybe getting a...
Hi all. Wondering if I'm the only one having this issue.
I have a flock of 12 layers and was generally getting 8-9 eggs/day. They range in age from 1-2 years.
I was feeding an organic, non-GMO feed from a regional feed mill. I switched to Kalmbach non-GMO 17% layer about a month ago to...
She was neither molting nor recently broody. Those were the only areas missing feathers.
She unfortunately passed away about an hour ago. If anybody knows what this could have been and how to treat it, would greatly appreciate that knowledge.
Hello all,
I have a hen who seemed a little off yesterday. She's almost 1.5 years old. She had some whitish/yellowish discharge around her vent, so we thought it was vent gleet. It was late in the day (almost sunset). Gave her a warm epsom salt bath and she perked up. Was able to get on...
