Comment by 'flashover1969' in article 'How to Keep Chickens Cool in the Summer'

Great article! I just have a comment about the electrolyte recipe....baking soda and sodium bicarbonate NaHCO3 are the same thing. So as that recipe is written, you will add too much. The recipe should be: 1 gallon of water H2O Dihydrogen monoxide:) 1 teaspoon of salt (NaCl) 1 teaspoon of baking...

    Unknown issues

Not exactly sure what it is, but you might consider giving her an anti-biotic such as Duramycin or Terramycin. You can usually find this at the feed store and I hope your chicken gets better.

I culled my first two roosters today

You could use a turkey fryer for scalding if you have one. The pot is huge and the burner used to heat the pot will get water boiling in no time at all.

    Hook worms

No offense, but Valbazen does get them all (Which is why it is considered a broad spectrum de-wormer). Valbazen (Albendazole) is actually prescribed to also kill intestinal & systemic Nematode (Roundworm) infections.

my hens have diaarhea for the past few day.

Yes you CAN give chickens plain yogurt. Besides having the hershy squirts, are you chickens showing any other signs of being ill? It's actually pretty common for chickens to have the runs for a few days. What is the color of it? Here is a link to a very helpful chart of chicken poo that can...

    Hook worms

For treatment of all worms use Valbazen. Valbazen kills every kind of worm they could possibly have. For chickens (liquid form of valbazen) Mix 1 cc wormer with 8 cc water and then give 2cc of that solution down the throat for large fowl and 1 cc of the mixture for small ones. For adult dog...

    White Leghorn Yucky Butt Issue

Sounds like your on the right track. I would keep her quarantined a bit longer and see how it goes.

Sudden death of a few of my girl!

First off, I am very sorry for your loss. I would send the corpse of your bird to a lab for a necropsy. There should be several in So Cal that will do it for free, but I could be wrong. My first thought, is that you have a toxic plant or something else in your yard that the chickens are...

Chicken limping/walking with toes curled... UPDATE: It's gotten worse!

She could have an infection that is wreaking havoc on her body. She could also have a kidney disease since the nerve that goes to her legs goes through the kidneys. Are there any other symptoms that you have observed? Poo consistency, color, discharge from eyes, nose, mouth, swelling...

Chicken paralysis? Fine last night, near death today

Keep an eye on the crop. I would definitely consider worming with Valbazen, considering all of the insects and worms that chickens eat. Just do a search of the forums for worming and valbazen and you will find threads on how to treat. Hope your bird gets better soon. Please keep us all...

    large skin lesion

I'm sorry for your loss. I would suggest having a necropsy as this may provide some extremely valuable information for future use. It could be Marek's, or it could be something else, but the only way to know is send your chicken to a lab. There should be a place that will do it for free.

    Purina Medicated Chick Feed

Quote: Could you rephrase the question seminolewind? I don't understand exactly what your asking. . From all the chicks on medicated feed, what percentage of them will get sick from lack of thiamine? Ok I understand now. I have used medicated starter for all of my chicks over the years...

    large skin lesion

It almost looks like some tumors I have seen. Only way to tell is have a vet (or yourself) send a tissue sample off to lab. The necrosis is a secondary infection. Some antibiotics will help with the secondary infections, but you need to find out if the growths are malignant or benign.
