Moving adult chickens, can I do it without catching all of them?

Hello there! I am trying to move my chickens into their new coop from a grower run I had them in. So far I've tried throwing food in there and that's about it. A few wonder in there but the rest seem very skeptical. Is there an easy way to do this or am I just going to have to catch all 12 and...

Several different types of bedding in coop?

Ok well at least now I know I can put the huge amount of leaves we get in the fall to use! That'll be great. If I put a tarp down in the shed that we are converting to a coop, will I be able to do deep bedding method? Will all the materials compost themselves with the tarp on the bottom? It...

Several different types of bedding in coop?

So I watched this youtube video (I'll paste the link below) where a woman had multiple types of bedding in her coop. I believe she had everything from leaves, dirt, sticks, hay, etc. She said her bedding was 3 years old and had NO smell. She said she would come out and turn it every once in a...

    Limited Free Range?

MsKathyNY, I feel more comfortable that my chickens will be limited free range only because we have lots of predators around. Having two big dogs in the yard is a plus as well. I've heard even little Chihuahuas will scare off most predators. Do you have a dog?

    Limited Free Range?

Everything was going well until my Wyandotte got out and the dogs tried to play with her...like a toy... but luckily I saw it right as it happened... She is fine though...my dogs weren't trying to kill her, just play. Still not ok. They won't be put together for a long time. Atleast until they...

    Limited Free Range?

Thank you! So much good advice. Just let the dogs in the same fence as the chickens and they did amazing. Much better than I thought they'd do actually. The Pyrenees playfully chased a couple but I scolded him and I think he learned that chasing them is BAD. Haha. I've been letting them out...

    Limited Free Range?

That's awesome! But also forgot to mention that they will be in a coop at night...it's a big shed we're converting into a coop. Also i say limited free range because it's really just a big sectioned off part of our backyard. They'll be in closed with a 4 foot high chain link fence.

    Limited Free Range?

Check out these girls! They're at my friends barn right now. I'm not sure what the Sussex was mixed with to make a chicken like this. I think they're so pretty.

Wow thanks so much for all the helpful replies! Great information... As of right now I have RIRs, Golden comments, Easter eggers, a barred rock, cuckoo maran, black austrolorp, golden sebrite, Cochin bantam, and will be getting a speckled Sussex hybrid this weekend. I have heard that some breeds...

    Limited Free Range?

Hello! I am new on BYC but have seen so much good stuff. So I have 12 pullets right (10 standard and 2 bantam) now in a 6.5ft x 30ft temporary run. We have a section of our back yard that we don't use very much and it is very woodsy. There are lots of shrubs and trees for the chicks. We do have...
