Helmeted Guinea Fowl | Our Tick Patrol | Springwater, Ontario

OUR TICK PATROL A friend brought us two 1-yr-old Helmeted Guinea Fowl after I was bitten by a tick on our property and got very sick w/ LYME DISEASE. What a couple of characters! We love the Guineas. We weren't set up for them though, and being inexperienced, we couldn't train them to go...

My hens won't use their ramp or go back into the coop without assistance.

The girls eventually figured out to hop-up into the coop unassisted (instead of huddling in the corner of their run against the gate, waiting for us to put them in). I think they wanted to stay together, and one of them couldn't hop-up into the coop easily (chubby meat bird). Year 2: No meat...

    LOST TAIL FEATHERS??

My 15-16 month old hen just lost her tail feathers, and more! Molting like crazy! She looks like a hedgehog. She also lost feathers next to her comb, but the comb looks beautiful... No injuries... which tipped me off... Because if there was bullying going on, in my experience, you will see...

    Chicken lost Feathers?

Reading this post, I feel so relieved! One of my 15 month old hens started losing all of her feathers a week ago. What a mess! Every tail feather, her belly, her head, all over. I thought she was attacked by something at first, but looking closely, there is no blood or anything. She definitely...

Is There Anything Chickens Love More Than Hostas??

A hosta makes a great nest on a hot day because they are so cool. Two of ours do that too, but then started eating them too. We have 3 varieties of hostas and they only went for one type. The others, no idea why not. Maybe because they aren't as droopy.

My hens won't use their ramp or go back into the coop without assistance.

Our hens are about 11 weeks old. They have a coop with a large run including lots of trees for cover. There is a ramp in the coop that goes down below. They won't go back into the coop at the end of the day (at dusk). They would stay out all night if we let them, I am pretty certain. We have to...

    Hosta OK?

Two of our meat birds started eating the hostas (two roosters). Once I increased the protein in their diet, they lost interest in the hostas.

Preparing for Winter in Central Ontario

Can anyone point me in the right direction in terms of specific temperatures inside and out - for Rhode Island Reds or similar hardy breeds? We're "newbies". We have 6 hens, HOWEVER 3 of them are "meaties" so they won't be roomies for much longer (they came from my son's classroom hatch, and...

    Winter?

What kind of chopped greens do you recommend? I tried chopping some broccoli and romaine lettuce, but nope! I am new to this. They do like quinoa, mashed apricot, and fresh steamed corn taken off the cob.

    Medicated food

We're about to switch from medicated chick starter to a non-medicated one which is also used for ducks. It took some time to locate it, and now I also know about a supplier who sells organics. If I could do it again, I'd start right away with non-medicated. I found a good link with info. When I...

Is it normal for chicken to huddle up in a corner at night?

Our chicks are just over a week old and always huddle at rest. Three of them, likely to be cozy and warm. They fuss and push and shove until they are each satisfied they are where they need to be, and they sleep in a huddle. But they're not in a coop yet. We'll see what they do then!
