    Problems with making sorghum syrup

Well I found out what I did wrong. I boiled it too long. It's like hard candy now. If you wanna make it I should warn you it's a long and laborious process, but here we go. Step 1: Pick out syrup style sorghum that's appropriate for your climate and soil. Don't accidentally get a grain...

    Problems with making sorghum syrup

To make a long story short I got into growing my own sorghum to make syrup plus my chickens love the seeds. I've made several batches this summer but my last batch came out weird. Unlike my previous batches that looked nearly identical to store bought, this last batch has a red tint to it...

A little update on my experiments with cornmeal: I went ahead and bought an old fashioned sifter from a Mennonite store and haven't looked back. Sifting out the "bran" makes the cornmeal way better. Plus my chickens love them. Of the types of corn that I've grown and made cornmeal from...

Since the thread has primarily focused on the corn portion of the 3 sisters, I decided to post some pics of the winter squash and pumpkins that did well this year in my 3 sisters. From left to right: honeyboat delicata, Butternut Rogosa Violina "Gioia" Squash, Seminole pumpkin (that likely...

Here's an update on the hookers blue corn. This is it when the first couple of kernels start to get a blue tint This is when its blue The 1st one is just as sweet as candy corn. Surprisingly the 2nd one is still tender enough to eat after a quick boil, though there isn't any sweetness...

What is the rationale for using plastic? Is this just in reference to weed suppression or warming the soil? If it's for the later, you're using a corn variety that is either way off kilter for your zone or planted at the wrong time. Corn shouldn't require such preparation in most of America...

This isn't planted in my 3 sisters section, but since the topic of different heirloom corn has come up so much I thought i'd include this pic. Its Hooker's sweet blue Indian Corn. Territorial seeds listed it gets around 4 ft and as you can see the plants are tiny. I included a sandal for size...

I'm not sure about the "hotness" of horse manure or what steps you should take. I would recommend both stowells evergreen and rareseeds.com. I've never ordered from sandhill, but I did notice they get a lot of bad reviews most of which complain of the order never getting there within a...

I planted all the corn within 3 days of each other. The reason the ones on the far left are bigger is because they are Cherokee flour corn with is supposed to get 15 ft tall. I planted my corn around may 6th. Normally you need to wait until may 14 at my location to plant corn but the 10 day...

I've planted in this layout for years and never had pollination problems. Earlier in the thread I have pics from last years 3 sisters garden. Anyway, I've never had a lack of corn pollination but we always have periodic bouts of high wind at my location so maybe it might not work as well in...

    Gardening Question

No it's not too late. Aim for plants that have around a 60 day maturity date. Plenty of zucchini and bush beans have around a 60 day maturity date. Other things that would fit into the time schedule are bok choy, kale, summer squash, and radishes.
