    Impacted Crop? 3 week old....

Thank you so much for your advice - I really couldn't believe it but it went down. When I had my first chicks they never filled up like this, not even close - I was convinced it was bad news. Just a little piggy. PHEW!!!!!

    Impacted Crop? 3 week old....

Hi All, I thought my baby chick had a tumour but I caught her today much to the distress of her and Mama hen - I think it might be an impacted crop? It feels grainy and hard, and it's huge - what can I do to help? [/IMG]

Day 18 and I picked up Mama hen and THERE WAS A BABY CHICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A little black one so possibly an Australorp. I'm beyond excited. Now I'm wondering when I need to put the chick food out? Now? Or tomorrow? When do they need to eat commercial food? #newbie

She started off with 6, 2 weren't fertilized and one is still unknown but probably not fertile either... Leaving just 3. I'm beyond excited I can see how hatching would become addictive and I haven't even got to the cute fluffy babies yet!

It's day 16 for my hen today.... I'm thinking of candling one last time as I think there is one non fertile egg under her. Also, does "lockdown" apply to broody hens hatching or just the incubators?

Is anyone else's broody getting picked on? My broody hen was out dust bathing today and my other hen bit her comb, then the next time she tried to dust bathe she pecked viciously at her neck..... I haven't seen this before with my two hens though the broody one is not at the top of the pecking...

Does everyone here keep all the chickens you hatch? If not, what do you do with the chicks? I have two hens and room for one or two more, if I end up with more hatching I'm just curious. Back to the nursery, advertise, word of mouth?

OOOh I just candled the eggs… it seems I have two definite babies growing (distinct blood veins at least).

Hello! I put 6 eggs under my broody australorp on Thursday afternoon. This is the very first time I've ever attempted hatching eggs and I'm so excited. Should I candle the eggs if Mama hen will let me near them? And should I bump her off the nest to eat and drink, she's not leaving voluntarily....

Just one egg under a Broody Hen?

I got our fertilised eggs from a nursery near by that sell also sell chickens, ducks, bunnies, coops etc. 3 eggs were from a pen full of Isa Browns, Leghorns and Australorps but with only one rooster to 30 hens so they weren't 100% sure that they would be fertilised, the other 3 eggs were from...

Just one egg under a Broody Hen?

That is so cute Krista! Thanks for your reply, a little friend for the chick sounds good. I was a bit annoyed over the broodiness at first, as she had gone broody in autumn, molted and was off the lay for months and months straight after that, and three weeks back in egg production and she's...
