Congrats on the successful hatches! Glad the others are looking good! I have 11 eggs in lockdown now to hatch on Friday. I saw movement in many on day 18, and those I didn’t see movement in look like they’re developing properly so I will hopefully have a high hatch rate. But both the Marans eggs...
I had grit available to them up until about a month ago (after the crop issues started), when the 2 recently culled hens began gorging themselves on it. I took it away, but have been throwing handfuls out in the run or yard each day. Now that the 2 hens are gone, I’ll put it back out. They also...
What kind of incubator do you have? On mine I can unplug the turner so it would remain stationary. If the turner is stuck, see if you can somehow turn off or stop the motor.
I am in need of more crop advice, and hoping you can help.
First all, an update to the previous crop concerns: last weekend we culled two hens with crop issues, including Molé the extremely pendulous chocolate Orp. (The 2nd hen had other issues so we put her down as opposed to putting her...
I would guess cockerel for the one with the yellow band based on the color of those wattles. That’s been a good (or maybe bad) sign to help me determine gender around this age.
Kookaburra is a mixed chick. His dad is a Black Copper Marans.
Mom is a Red Orpington roo over a Speckled Sussex hen. She was orangey red colored (she looked orange next to my RIR). This is mom as a pullet. I’ll find a better pics and update. Kookaburra was a surprise hatch. He was supposed to...
Sorry for your loss. I feel the exact same way about production breeds. I started with the sweetest 2 little ISA Browns from TSC. One lasted 18 months and the other barely over 2. I mostly just do Heritage breeds now.
I know the grass is slow to digest, but I thought it wasn’t a problem unless it was in long pieces that tangled together. Most of the grass that came out of both hens’ crops & gizzards were tiny pieces of grass.
I mean, the first hen had a crop that was so pendulous she wasn’t going to going to...
These 2 hens were both actively laying. The Orpington hen had stopped only about 2 weeks ago likely due to her crop issues. The mix hen laid just the day before we culled, so I wasn’t too concerned about reproductive issues this go round. But I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that next time.
I agree that you have blue and dark blue chicks. These are 3 chicks I hatched in December. 1 splash and 2 blue. One is more obviously blue than the other.
And this is Miyagi. I thought she was black for about the first month of her life! She's still pretty dark- she looks lighter in this photo...
