Hi,
My wife and I are looking for around a dozen Black Copper Marans and/or Cuckoo Maran "hen" chicks. Preferably in Wisconsin, or willing to ship.
Let me know what you have and prices. Thank you!
Hi all
We have a very broody hen, and she just successfully sat on and hatched out 5 chicks. We pulled the chicks, as we sell them locally. How often WOULD she sit on a new batch of fertile eggs to hatch out for us? Should we give her a week off at a time, or ????
Any help would be great...
Hi Rainbow
Well, I am over in Northern Wisconsin (just across the pond from you)....so we are always on the look out for cold hardy birds. my kids currently have Golden Laced Wyandottes, Cuckoo Marans, black copper marans, easter eggers, a few sex links, a couple silkies.
We'd like to add...
well I had 5 of the 13 hatch today. I know 3 in the bator are "duds", so there are 5 more "hopefuls" for tonight or tomorrow. We'll see.
I have the 5 in my brooder now, and it's set up in a large rubbermaid, with a heat lamp at one end, where the temp at floor level is about 93F..and at the...
Cool. I have two "pipped" right now....when should I intervene? The first one pipped about 11am this morning, and right now has a good size hole, about the size of a dime open and occasionally pokes it's beak out, but has NOT zipped the shell yet..he just sticks his beak out and chirps. Should...
yeah I hear you! I am off work today, and find myself walking over to look through the window on the bator to see if there is anymore progress every 10 minutes!!! . I can see one that has pipped and can see a little beak poke out a hole the size of a pencil eraser....but it's been this way...
that's weird how early they were. As of this morning I have one "pipped" that I can see of the 13 Black Copper Marans I set. Looks like today into tomorrow will be "the time"

Wow pips on day 18? wondering if his bator ran a little hot??? .. yeah I didn't get any answers right away, so I just used an online chicken/hatch calculator, and it told me they should be in lockdown..so yesterday about noon they went into lockdown. I've been watching and no pips yet, so...
So if I set 13 black copper maran eggs on March 27, would today be lockdown? We did candle them last night, and had 3 that let light shine from one end to other...so I assume those were non fertile. all the rest show a sizable airsac, and the rest of the egg is dark..and it's very hard to tell...
We have 6 chicks, and two have pasty butt. we cleaned with warm water, and one chick had a "protuding" vent as well, which was a bit red. We added some Apple Cider Vinegar to their drinking water, and then dabbed on a little hydrocortisone cream to the red swollen area.
Hoping this will help...
I just threw away my brinsea spot check. I have a mercury type thermometer in my incubator that was reading 99F, and then my cooking thermometer that is the HIGHLY accurate (and expensive) Thermopen and it reads 99.6F
my Spot check was reading 104-105F. Obviously it was not working.
