    Thank you for your replies, everyone. I think I know what I'll do - Whenever the rooster crows and my son complains about it, I'm going to take his hand, explain to him that the rooster is not harmful, and then go ring the doorbell of the neighbor and ask to see the rooster.

    Other noises don't bother him as much as the rooster does. I think it's the unexpectedness that makes it especially unpleasant. It's also just a very distinct noise, like an "acquired taste" that takes a lot of getting used to.
