Bobs, snowflake or otherwise, spook much more than other quail. Small or short cages are not ideal. Chicken wire or hail screen type wire will eventually lead to injury or demise. I'd look into the nylon type poultry netting of at least the top two feet of the sidewalls and overhead. They still...
Completely off topic but I'm reminded of a story. Several years ago I was having one of those days where the world seems to be aligned against you...nothing was going right. About 2:00 I gave up and thought 'forget this I'm going hunting'. It was way too early in the afternoon for deer to be...
We really take for granted the opportunities we have. Whether a person enjoys hunting or not we have the option to choose. Some of the best days I've spent hunting had nothing to do with killing an animal. Sitting in a duck blind with my son and my dog watching the sun come up...hearing the air...
I've had lots of late hatchers recently. Threw some in the trash can two weeks ago after day 27 then walked by and heard a peep...looked forever for the escapee and then finally looked in the can. Had 6 more hatch. Figures they'd die but all remained strong after 24 hours in a trash can.
Ordered two 50 pound Kuhl range feeders to try out. So far I'm very pleased. They actually hold about 30 pounds which is disappointing but they function very well. The night after I put them in the pens we had about an inch of rain with 40mph driving wind. Both feeders...dry as a powder house...
Perhaps cheap was a relative term...you can get the turner for the hovabator for about $40 make sure it's got quail rails. Yes, put them on the turner as soon as you collect them or turn your collected eggs by hand three or four times a day.
Most dogs I've been around hate going to the vet. They are nervous and uncomfortable. Why would I want that to be my best buddy's last memory? We'll go out...chase a bird as best we can, have a steak, and it will be over instantly. It's my responsibility as his caretaker and I owe it to him...
Good info. I collect eggs twice a day and put them in the incubator each Monday and hatch on Wednesdays. I've got and 85% hatch rate right now. The only eggs I have trouble with are those that say on the ground too long. By a cheap egg turner and put them on it when you collect them. Keep them...
Grew up hunting so have a different perspective on things. Killed my first deer when I was 5 and remember feeling more amazed by it than sad. I remember sitting there petting it and I couldn't quit looking at it. Was always involved in the cleaning and butchering as well. Never really bothered...
