    Young rooster terrorizing my hens

Thank you Azygous! We are going through a very similar situation with a young roo we hatched in April. He has just come into his own and has not given our ten hens a moments peace in the last two weeks. We only have one hen laying right now and that is because she refuses to use the nesting...

Can I get my broody hen a baby chick?

Rachel, Thank you for the excellent advise! There is a lovely breeder near by who will no doubt let me bring back any roo's or extra chicks when they've been weaned. I appreciate your suggestions! Thanks so much!

Can I get my broody hen a baby chick?

If anyone can answer my questions, its my backyard chicken family!!!! We have a Wyandotte hen who has repeatedly gone broody this year. The first time we put her in solitary and it worked for a period of time. Now, she is back at it and refusing to leave the nesting box and growling up a...

Whats the weirdest thing your chickens have eaten or tried to eat??

My husband and I had just returned from a day of fishing and set our bait bucket of live shrimp down in the back yard. The ladies went NUTS for the live shrimp! And, it was just plain comical watching them run around the yard with flailing shrimp in their beaks.

This was hysterical and I loved it because I've lived it too! All except the rooster. If only my neighborhood would allow them. And I, too, thought sunshine had caused my chickens to have fits of epilepsy.

When do Wyandottes generally start laying?

This thread has been quite helpful. I have two Blue Laced Wyandottes right now at 27 weeks and still not one egg, nor are either squatting. Nice to know it may take a bit longer for these big girls. My Buff Orps and Dominiques started laying right around 22 weeks. Here is a pic of Elsie and...

Comment by 'FowlmouthChick' in article 'Using Sand In Your Chicken Coop'

If you want your chickens to come to you on command, start training them on dried meal worms. Its like crack for chickens ;) My ladies love them so much they know the sound of the contain and where its kept. If I so much as open the bin where I keep the meal worms the ladies come running to me...
