    Rooster in with the hens

He has attacked me, he ran at me yesterday and I closed the coop door before he got to me but he just slammed into the door full speed anyway. As soon as I go into coop he gets in between me and the hens and starts flushing his neck feathers, is this normal behavior, is he being protective?

    Rooster in with the hens

Quick question: Is it ok for the rooster to be left with the 2 hens that are sitting on eggs? He is extremely aggressive with me when I have tried to go in to check on them. Will he hurt the chicks when they hatch?

    Rooster and hens

Also the rooster is becoming even more aggressive, would that just be him protect eggs and hens?

    Rooster and hens

I just went out to gather eggs and Sue was sitting on what has become a sizable clutch (10 or more). I walked around and opened the coop door to the chicken yard, when I came back around she was outside, but one of her brood was then sitting on the eggs. Is it just coincidence or will they all...

    Rooster and hens

He was good with me up until 2 days ago when he jumped at me twice. I had an huge black austrolop that used to be extremely aggressive, I didn't know how to deal so basically I stayed away from him as much as possible. I hope this new guy stays nice, I don't like the rough behavior around my kids.

    Rooster and hens

I have a funny question. My mother hen Sue, had 3 chicks survive a hatch last Sept. It turns out she had 2 hens and 1 rooster. I went out one morning and Sue was sitting on about 10 eggs! She did get up and move so my assumption was she had just been laying or something. But what if they do get...

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

I am not sure what zone that you would be in but here on the south shore (zone 102) it is any sex deer for the archery season which includes crossbow and muzzle loader and one any sex deer for the general season. I think Colchester is in zone 107 which also has the either sex deer rules this...

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

I will try and get some pics and post them soon. I was supposed to have a couple of weeks off but instead got roped into doing just enough shifts to completely ruin it. Also whitetail deer archery season opens tomorrow here in nova scotia and for me that generally makes the wife a widow for a...

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

I had the egg with some bacon and homemade toast this morning. Tasted delicious! Anyway, I finally have a couple of days off so it is time to clean some coops and construct some boxes and roosts. The kids will help with these tasks making them take longer but more enjoyable .If it turns out ok I...

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

I got called into work very early this morning (4am), so I didn't get a chance to check on the chickens until now (6pm). Sue laid an egg! It is actually an beige-ish coloured egg and she had been laying something more darker brown. Is that normal? She is still nestling down with all her chicks...

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

I quickly cleaned out another small building that I have on the property and the 4 fellows are in there. This morning I need to figure out where to put the rototiller and the gas generator. First morning in a couple of months that we woke up to roosters crowing. Kind of funny..

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

The roosters are 2 eskal oilers and 2 penedesenca's. They were destined to the chopping block if we didn't take them. I guess I will have to quickly construct some type of habitat for these until I can figure out what I am going to do with them.

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

Just a quick update, I am working a weekend of nights and should actually be sleeping right now. Sue and her 3 chicks are doing awesome. They spend a lot under her and they always coming running out to see who is peaking in on them. Sue is still super defensive and still sitting a lot but she...

    Hi, joined looking for answer.

I did candle the egg. It was all dark, and also it 'sloshed' when I moved it. So I opened it. It had a yellow-brownish liquid inside, and no yolk. Also it didn't smell. I went back to check on Sue after and she seemed calmer then before, so maybe things can get back to normal for her now.
