    Fertile Eggs for Eating?

If you're ever in question of how old your eggs are, and if they're still good for eating; you can "float" them. Choose a bowl or cup that is deeper than your eggs are long (from round end to pointy end). Fill the bowl with water and place the unbroken eggs in the bottom. -- If they lay flat on...

Raising Quail for meat / eggs

Have you done any youtube vids on your aquaponics and worm farm? I have been looking at aquaponics for about a year and I really want to try it out. What is your climate like? Sounds like the quail will fit right in with your systems.

    Male to female quail ratio

@ Sill - I have had some roos that went beyond just breeding behavior, to tearing the hens apart. That was probably my FIRST lesson with these birds. After I had to put down my first (perfectly good) hen, from male aggression; I moved on to my SECOND important lesson: How to butcher my own...

Foam inside the FEMALE hens feces.

Good luck with your next batch. Just so you know... In my experience, quail go through TONS of water. I have pop bottle waterers in my quail cages and the same size waterer in my chicken cage. 7 Quail will drink/empty the bottle in one 60 degree day....the 4 bantam (silkie/cochin) chickens will...

PLEASE HELP! Coturnix Quail have large lump/growth on toe/foot

I think perhaps that if the infection is staph in nature....and it looks well progressed....you may need to "operate" to remove the infection. Maybe look into "bumblefoot" on this forum. There are some great walk-throughs. STEEL yourself for some gross and graphic images!! Personally, I...

Foam inside the FEMALE hens feces.

Oh, that is always a hard thing to come home to! I am sooo sorry for your loss. Was their water full? How hot was it during the day? How old were they?

my first time in back yard birds

Button quail are adorable. Sorry I can't tell the sex on them.... I have several eggs in the incubator currently. They are the tiniest little eggs I've ever seen! Small enough to fit in a thimble.

PLEASE HELP! Coturnix Quail have large lump/growth on toe/foot

I had some foot problems from running them on a floor with wire that was too fine. It cut their feet....cuts got infected....became bumblefoot...decided to butcher instead of surgery on feet. It might've gotten its toe caught on something and broken it. Or an open wound got infected.

    Male to female quail ratio

The boys will likely mate them to death. Best to keep your girls safe. I have 1 male to 6 females, in two different pens... the guys have them all bald. Have even pulled the boys out and given the girls a break once.

Raising Quail for meat / eggs

JaeG - I was only speaking to my city laws, where I live. Where I am, the ordinance includes poultry and fowl under the definition livestock. That language and law will vary by state, county, city & township in the US. I know the bantams are quieter than larger breeds....but if the OP is trying...

my quails not laying. they are all male or female, (with Picture)

Of the 3 pics I see, 2 look like hens and the one with the honey colored breast looks like a male. I have a 6 to 1 ration in my breeder cages and my girls are still bald. If it gets too bad, I take the male out and put him in a bachelor cage; give the girls a break for a week. Haven't had...

Raising Quail for meat / eggs

I live in a densely packed, residential area, in a medium sized city. The houses are about 15 feet apart (or less). I can spit in any direction, from the middle of my property, and hit a house. Our ordinance doesn't explicitly allow "livestock". I haven't had any complaints from neighbors so...

    Hatching Time discrepancy please help

A note from my current hatching experience....I have a batch of coturnix quail that I set on March 3rd. They just started hatching Tuesday the 24th. There are two more that hatched late today, and 3 eggs that may yet hatch, from that batch. Depending on how you count, that is 20-22 days...

Is anyone feeding ORGANIC, and what brand?

Anniekins - That's okay...I can google different brands in my tri-state area and ask at the new feed mill. I like the suggestion to go with turkey starter, that helped to get me on a track that should be more accessible.
