Thank you so much. That does make me feel better. I like your idea of moving the chicks to one hen. I think the hen that has been broody the longest (and just lost her chick) should get them. She actually has been broody the longest because I was constantly trying to break her of it, then...
Thank you so much. My husband is buying a dog crate and we are going to put her in with her eggs tonight. And I went to a thrift store and got another cage so hopefully we can keep them separated at this point. The second hen had a chick today, and now the mother who lost her chick gets up...
Thank you! They are a few days apart, it seems the hens get up and let other hens in to lay then hop back on. But I think roughly up to at most a week apart. One hen (I think the most aggressive but could be wrong) has the youngest eggs and keeps trying to steal the eggs of the mother whose baby...
I have 3 hens that are broody right now with their own clutches of eggs. Not an ideal situation, I know. They are all in the same coop, in their own nesting boxes. I constructed a makeshift small fence to block off the broody who hatched first, then woke up this morning to find it knocked over...
Your chicks are so cute in those pics, I can see how they could dash back through the fence if they needed to. I’m tempted to try soon with modified introductions. I could let only a few older ones out at a time to be around the chicks. Only issue is once chicks get out I’ll need to stay out...
They can see each other now, just can’t be in direct contact. I have them in an open area I let the flock out into for a portion of the day.
They are much smaller than the majority of the original flock, I have different breeds, and a few bantams. I had always read to let them get as big as...
I do…the big coop is attached to the run, not enclosed, and the flock stays in a fenced in area most of the time. I’m not sure the coop will fit through the run door, but I can try. Good option if it works, thank you!
I have 3 almost 2 month old chicks I’m keeping separate from my larger flock til they are larger. I’ve been putting them outside in a small coop I bought on Amazon during the day, and bringing them inside our garage at night. My husband is ready for them to go outside at night now. I’m trying to...
Thank you! They are outside now in a make shift cage so they have fresh air and more room to explore during the day. They seem fine with no additional heat during daytime. At night, I’ll make sure the heat is far enough away. Actually might also get a lower wattage bulb.
Good to know, thank you! It has been in the upper 60’s or 70 at night lately. I thought since they will be in a garage at night in the tent, I would put the heat lamp toward the opening but from a distance.
I have 3 four week old chicks that I am about to transfer to a tent in garage from their small brooder. At night I plan to put heat lamp on, but do they need it if the outside temp is above 80 degrees? And probably warmer in garage. Thank you for any info.
A neighbors dog came in and attacked my flock this morning. She carried off a hen, which i got back. But my roo is gone, his frsthers scattered around my yard. He might be hiding, but i have looked everywhere. Any advice on how to look for him? He is very devoted to his flock, and i am very fond...
I apologize for my late reply! Its been hectic lately and just now checked this website. She is doing great! I put her fully with the flock 2 days ago, and so far all.is well. I was worried because i tried a few times to let her back in with them, and she ran around attacking them all. I figured...
I should have added that the pic of your hen was helpful, thank you! Glad to hear she recovered. I'll definitely check out the links you sent. I know very little about wound care, healing rates, etc.
