Thanks everyone for your support and helpful advice. I guess it just wasn't meant to be for that little one. So peculiar that it had that burst of energy before it died. So fascinating that the other duckling knew so soon after it had died.
The other duckling is now back out with Mum. She...
She got very lively and happy looking about an hour ago and I thought that she was going to make it. The yolk sac had absorbed even more but still a small bit left. About 20 minutes ago the other duckling began to peep noisily and the she had stopped breathing :(
The duckling started breathing quite heavily and not being very vocal so I went out and took one of the other ducklings from the mama duck and brought it inside to put next to him. The breathing is still very fast and shallow but has slowed down considerably.
Miss Lydia, I wasn’t sure what to do about the exposed yolk sac until it could be absorbed. What would you suggest doing? It is smaller than it was earlier on.
The duckling seems to have gotten a bit cold this past hour. He is in a box on a heat pad. The thermometer says 36 degrees (Celsius)...
The duckling has dried off and fluffed up a bit. Still fairly docile but talking and moving its head around now. It still has its legs tucked up in the hatching position. In addition to the damage to the bill it also has a red bite mark on one of the wings so I have put some antiseptic on that...
Ok heat pad is warming up, I will leave the duckling down my top until it is warm enough and I can confirm the temperature with a thermometer. I do have some antibiotic ointment that I will pop on the bill now. I just can’t believe this duckling is alive with all of the ants that it was...
I just made a video of the duckling. Excuse the bits of green duck weed that are still on it from where I dunked it in the pond to wash off the ants. I don’t have a heat lamp but do have a heat pad. At the moment it is wrapped in damp paper towel over its yolk sac bit, then wrapped in a hand...
Hi, I have had ducklings hatching under mother duck today. I last checked on them a few hours ago and when I checked again the Mama duck was squawking. Meat ants were all over the last remaining duckling that was still hatching. The other hatched ducklings are fine and the ants aren’t...
Hi everyone, just an update on what happened with our egg bound duck . . .
I had my house sitter follow the procedures listed on the forums (feeding calcium, warm bath/swim and an internal examination). The duck still didn't lay an egg that night but did pass some white creamy looking liquid...
She is on Laucke Showbird breeder mp pellets: http://www.lauckemills.com.au/products/category/DBUARVIG-layer-breeder/5682
I don’t provide oyster shell but will start if it will prevent this from happening to my other ducks. None of my other laying ducks have ever had any problems.
She...
A little bit of white runny liquid came out of her while she was in the water. Only a tiny bit. Not sure what that means?? She seems more active now. We had some Tums so they have crushed the tablet and put it in with some water and duckweed for her and she I saw drinking it.
Our house sitter has her inside in a dog crate. She followed the post on backyard chickens and did an internal examination and said she couldn’t feel anything she went in about 1inch. She has got the duck in a warm water in the bath tub. The duck seems more relaxed and is drinking lots and...
Ok so I’ve read through the post on egg binding in hens - is it the same for ducks . . . https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/egg-binding-symptoms-treatment-and-prevention.66978/
Hi, something is wrong with my 5 month old duck. She isn’t walking properly, although nothing appears to be physically wrong with either her legs or feet. She is a welsh harlequin x Indian runner. She hasn’t started laying yet - her sisters who are the same age have been laying for about a...
