Please read through all of the info on this site for raising babies. Banties are particularly delicate from my opinion. Having said that, if you mail ordered them, it was tough on them and (from my experience) not all will survive.
Be sure your brooder lamp is at the proper temp, they should...
This is so great, thanks for all the info. Are there telling sex characteristics or are we just waiting for eggs? The little Princess Muscovy keeps flying the coop, so our plan to get her a partner/flock to hang with didn't work so far.
I have never heard her hiss, but she "puffed" at me when I accidentally startled her. Is that a thing? This will be our first adventure into ducks. Also, if you have time, please check out my thread under geese... we were told they were geese, but I think maybe they are just big ducks. One of...
Hi experts! This beautiful duck flew into our yard Friday night. It belonged to our neighbor who said to keep it. He said he swapped her with the intent to breed her, but didn't have a drake.
After consulting my trusty Google, I am wondering if she is more likely a he due to the beautiful...
Long post warning: my neighbors duck free into or yard Friday night. (His new puppy is learning to be a farm dog :) He told us to keep 'her and identified her as a Muscovy. She hung out with our chickens but was starting to be picked on so we decided to build a pen. Knowing that ducks like...
Housing chicks and full grown chickens will likely kill the new ones. You should separate them, put a brooder light on them and allow space. Chicks will settle in and 'sleep' at night, but if they're peeping excessively all night they are too hot, too cold, hungry, etc...
HI from Bakersfield, too! We beat the heat for our flocks by freezing ice in dollar tree plastic bowls. In the afternoon we drop a big chunk of ice by the coop (for our free ranging flock) and in the dust bath for the quail pen. They also love mud... provide wet dirt and they will scratch that...
You can see her staring at the sky occasionally - but my husband has not seen it, so it's not usual. This pose is captured after drinking, which is when it's really obvious.
HI all -
We've had chickens for years and I've never encountered this problem. Ordered a dozen chicks from My Pet Chicken. All were very healthy and no deaths, but this little Buff Orpington demonstrated this strange behavior from the beginning. When she was a few days old, it was all day...
Please weigh in! 8 weeks, the comb is significantly more pronounced than the sibling, Willy Nilly. Am i seeing saddle feathers on this little guy? S/he is a Sicilian Buttercup.
Please excuse our make shift dog-kennel-coop. (Transitioning them to free range with the older girls)
Hi! We are three months in. 7 ladies, one male. They are in about 27 sq.ft on raised wire. We have laid down straw, as I hate to have an animal always on wire. In addition, we added a big flat Tupper ware with soil, as they love a good dirt bath. Prior to the recent heat wave, we were getting...
