Can you skip the plywood floor? For the sand to work best, it needs to be in contact with the dirt, so it can wick away moisture, and break things down properly.
I have an 8x8 shed/coop my husband built me, with a dirt floor and hardware cloth over that, and several inches of sand on top. I...
I throw out scraps and occasionally some mealworms...
As for the heat, it's been below zero here at night (Colorado), and I have no insulation or heat in my coop (though it is sturdy, and blocks the wind). No supplemental light either (though our plan is to add some in the mornings, next year)...
The Chicken Chick article explains it very well. If you add supplemental light, it should increase their light to NO MORE than 16 hours a day. They need the 8 hours of dark/rest for health, just like we do. And only add light in the morning, not at night. She uses led rope lights, so no...
I just posted about your birds, on Facebook. One of our group replied you were going to Brighton. I might be interested in getting a few from you. Can we chat? I will send you a pm
Mine haven't had trouble with hot sand. But we don't have the entire run covered in it. (We do have sand in the coop, instead of shavings). The hens dig down to a cool spot, and dust bathe. We also have a kiddie pool in the run, which we fill with water on hot days, and dunk any that are...
Woohoo! Congrats!
I agree with the Sand suggestion. We have a dirt floor (wire underneath), and sand on top of that. It works GREAT. And San in the wet parts of the run.
Glad you're ok. So scary!
We have two really mean roos, that are kept together in an x-pen, in the coop (they can see the other 20 chickens, but not harm them). We have a third roo that has been pecking my 10yo. THe remedy is that she now wears gloves (He takes chunks from her hands), and she immediately holds him upside...
She sounds a lot like my sister. Sis said she wanted hens, and asked what she needs. She got distracted when I was telling her. Then she told me she wants 3-4 of MINE (which she has yet to see), because she doesn't want to bother with chicks. When I told her she cannot have mine, but I would be...
WE have red star roos (sent as "extras" from the hatchery). WHhen they've been aggressive, we have the person involved hold them upside-down for 4-5 seconds. Does the trick, shows them their place, and ends the aggression.
