I purchased 10 Delawares from Ideal Poultry in July 2013. I gave one away to a friend and one turned out to be a rooster. So I have 8 hens and 1 rooster in a pen with one Orloff hen the same age.
They started laying in early January at about 24-25 weeks.
From the 9 hens we get 8 eggs a...
Thanks. Easter Egger would be fine by me.
The wind was blowing when I took the pick and may have puffed her feathers but her face is sleek and that is what confused me.
I ordered an a few hens from the local feed store this spring just in case my first incubation went bad.
Anyway, the feed store reported that they mistakenly sold one of my chicks and they sold me this "mystery chick".
I think she hatched in the second half of March. I think she is a she!
She...
Dear BYC,
Earlier this year I hatched some FBCM eggs I purchased from a breeder. I included in the uncubator some of my own Welsummer eggs that had been fertilized by a Black Copper Marans Rooster, simply for more laying hens here at the ranch.
Hatched on 1 April.
The results are...
So final count was 19 hatched. 1 had a twisted leg and was culled, another was small and weak and stopped eating. 17 left.
of the remaining 12 eggs that did not hatch, I found about half to be infertile and 4-5 that were fully developed. Odd. Maybe when we had 15 hatch and the humidity shot...
No pipping and no hatching.
We moved the chicks to the brooder, removed shells etc.
The incubator is really stinks! I think i is a combo of all the hatching yuck and maybe some bad eggs.
I think I will leave it for another couple days. Day 23 just started.
Day 22 ends at 4pm today.
We have 18 hatched so far. The first Friday night, 15 on Saturday and 2 yesterday.
The remaining 14 eggs have not pipped.
Should I still be hopeful that some of the remaining eggs may hatch?
Thanks. The cool part is watching my 6 year old daughter. We have the incubator set up in the guest room on a night stand. She is pretty much stationed on the bed watching every move.
We woke up this morning to find 11 chicks hatched. 3 zipped and working. Another 5 pipped and the rest of the eggs have been pushed out to the perimeter and we cannot see what is going on.
The FBCM chicks are pretty darn cute with their black and white coloring. The crosses are more of an all...
Thanks for the reply
oops. typo. 10 out of 30.
I am surprised it is happening so early. I thought they would start at he end of day 21 (tomorrow) and really hatch out on Easter. I want the guys to SLOW down!
Help?
I am a bit confused. Today at 4pm PST is the end of day 20. 10 out of 3 eggs pipped already. Lots of rockin and rolling and peep peep stuff going on.
Is this normal? I thought this was all supposed to happen on day 21?
So today at 4pm is day 18. We took out the automatic turner, and candled again before going back in.
16 FBCM look ok.
The olive egger is a solid mass and I cannot see an air gap.
16 of the Welsummers fertilized by the FBCM are in. 2 look iffy, but do not stink so I am keeping them in.
I...
So today should be the end of day 10. We candled again.

OK. Tonight was the completion of day 7.
We candled. I had a real tough time as it is my first time candling and the eggs are super dark.
