Sheet of "drop cloth". I wrap the top around a 1x2 and nail that to the wall a couple feet above the roost. I have a tall coop so the roost is 4' up.

It looks great. Roost 16" from wall is good. They will poop on the wall. I don't use poop shelves. I hang a big sheet of plastic from the wall and continue it on the floor beneath the roost. I sweep off the poop everyday and when it gets too messy, I scrub it all. I replace the plastic...

Is there an AC you can put in the chicken coop? I could really use advice!!!

I use a cheap box fan and have windows on 3 sides of the coop. Yes, it gets covered with dust and feathers too quickly. I have to regularly brush and shake it off. I finally put a screen over it so I'm hoping that solves the problem. No way would an AC work. It would get clogged too fast...

Review by 'Frostette' in article 'Two Dog Farm Chicken Coop'

Well thought out coop! Thanks for sharing. I would recommend eventually enlarging the pen, unless you will let them out in your yard during the day when you can watch them. They really need to run around and they're so fun to watch as everything interests them

adequate "fly-down" area in front of roost

If the roost is only 24" up, they'll just hop down.

    poop tray distance from roost?

I think your coop is too small to worry about poop trays. I lay plastic under my roost on the floor and up the back wall. I have a 4x4 holding it on the floor to help keep the straw out. Also, I notice a lot of nest boxes. You only need 1 or 2. That will give you more space.

Can I Remove a Roosting Bar?

Chickens will smash themselves together, even when it's very hot. I dont know why, but especially if the roosts are staggered. They all want the top! If they need the lower roost to help them get to the top, leave it in

    Roost bar question.

Definitely need at least 16" between roosts and from the wall. They will all want to be on the top roost and it's amazing how they can squish themselves in. So it would be best to put all 3 roosts at the same height. And I'm convinced 2x4's are the best roosts

    What am I?

I'm thinking it's a little boy! (because of the neck feathers (saddle)

[now dead] Sick 2yo hen w yellow diarrhea (pics)

I'm sorry. I've been reading all the posts similar to yours because I have a hen that has been lethargic with watery poop for about a week. Lots of members also say the poop is yellowish. I would think that means an egg isn't coming out correctly. But nobody is suggesting that. My hen is...

How nice! I use plastic along the back wall and floor area of my roost. I sweep the droppings off the floor daily. Clean it with soap and water when it gets too dirty. I use 2x4's for roosts and think that's the only way to go!

    Coop layout questions/feedback request

Oops, hadn't finished....I want to stress ventilation. Texas (ugh!). It's way too hot and you will need a fan and lots of windows. And trees and shrubs nearby. But you also get enough cold weather in the winter to make it necessary to make the coop able to keep the chickens comfortable. And...

Coops done! What do you think?

I like the way your coop looks. Really nice. But I wouldn't put more than 4 hens in there. Unless you let them free range during the day. And you only need 2-3 nest boxes. That'll give you some more room.
