The solar panel and batteries will probably run you a pretty penny though.
If you're handy with electronics, I've seen some people rewiring scooter batteries to run pumps through the night.
All the chicks no longer need a heat lamp, in fact it's gotten somewhat hot these days...
With that, I've been trying to come up with a neat project I can use the heat lamps for. I have two 150W red bulbs.
I was thinking of making a dehydrator, but I also heard that you're really not meant to...
Hey, I just started using a similar setup for my birds too. Two 5 gallon buckets, one with ports and the other with water cups.
Yup, I noticed that issue almost right away too. The birds stick their necks in to feed but when they pull it out they just spill it on the floor.
It's better than...
Just read this article, linked to me below after I made this thread. Super useful feature!
I'm also realizing that I might have made my coop 6" deep instead of 12... Easily rectified but still a silly mistake!
I'm brooding two separate batches of chicks, one in the coop (on wood) and another in the run (on sand). I cover the both brooding areas in pine shavings and that has worked decently well for the past month.
I've been noticing and increase in "funk" though, equally in both brooders, and it's a...
Have you had success mixing other stuff into your chick's water?
The farm I bought all my chicks from uses an electrolyte powder (forgot to ask what type when I went).
I've been putting a teaspoon of genuine ACV into ~1L, I've also seen people mixing honey into the water for some extra sugar...
Quick question about bedding the chick's brooder.
I have 10 chicks brooding in my coop fenced in with some cardboard, the coop itself is wood floored, open-air with large ventilation. Hot, dry climate.
I've put them on very coarse wood shavings (dust-free, sold as "horse bedding") and heard...
They certainly love pecking at my fingers there's no doubt.
They used to be so shy just a few days ago but I kept repeating the same sound when feeding them and now they come running for some treats (wet feed) soon as they hear it!
One of the older Brahma chicks loves to peck at the food in my...
I haven't had any luck tempting my 2 week old chicks with anything, tried things from wetted feed to small bits of lettuce but they're still really shy or completely uninterested in the treats.
It's heartening to hear that they'll grow more interested in feed over time though, these chickens...
Any tips or ideas on what herbs I can grow inside the run? I've got a corner that gets an okay amount of sunlight, and with my climate it never quite gets cold.
There's already a few trees in the run, but I figured it'd be nice to grow something with soft leaves for the girls to peck at :)
I've...
Here's an interesting article by someone who used what's known as a "Skippy Filter". A combination mechanical and bio-filter.
~1000 Gallon pond, 100 Gallon filter, 6-7 Ducks.
https://www.tyrantfarms.com/how-to-build-a-backyard-pond-with-diy-biofilter/
Seen that one, weird I didn't link it, must've forgotten...
It's a similar concept to what the others were doing, pool>solids removal>biofilters. He's just doing a lot more with the water. As far as the specifics, I'd like to avoid using a settling tank because that's just a hotbed for...
Poo is high in Nitrogen, if you're growing tomatoes or peppers you'll want to start off with it (it encourages strong, leafy growth), but then hold off on it once it starts fruiting since leaf production is what you don't want.
At that point I either use a fertilizer with more...
Aren't chickens rife with Salmonella and bacteria? We cook it out regardless.
I've never eaten duck meat though I assume you cook it out just as much as chickens
EDIT: To add, I'm asking around local people I know (and people they know) that own ponds and ducks, I'll get back with...
I realize that I should contextualize this a bit more, "small" means different things to different people.
The "pond" I have space for is between 350-750 Gallons (depending on how deep I make it), so it's more of a little pool the ducks can enjoy and clean themselves in.
