    Our hens tend to lay in the morning, so we let them roam free in the afternoons. They have been laying for 4 months now and they always lay in the coop, but if we let them out in the morning, we do not find any eggs in there

    We live in Westchester County in NY and we let them go out of their coop and into the run at all times. Ours don't mind walking and pecking through the snow, but they go in when it is snowing. A couple of heat lamps during the night and even days if we think it is too cold

    My one week old chicks are pecking each other's tails

    Thanks to everybody for your help. I kept the two injured chicks separated and put iodine spray until their tails were OK. I moved everybody together to their new coop yesterday (6 feet by 6feet). They are not bothering them anymore. I think it was just too crowded in the brooder (32 chicks!)

    I got chicks one week ago. Today they began pecking on the tails of two of them. I separated them and put some iodine. Could it be they need more space? Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance for your help

    what kind of heat lamp are you guys using

    I use the same thermostat that azelgin uses. I have tried the ceramic bulbs (150w and 250w) and they have all failed (maybe my fault). I now use 250W red bulbs

    Using food grade Diatomaceous Earth, DE?

    I buy it from Randall Burkey and from a local horse feed store. I mix it with the chicken food, I put it over the wood shavings in the coop and mix it in in their dust bath box too
