I bought three splash maran chicks off someone locally and they’re all eating and drinking and active BUT one of the chicks has been open mouth breathing for about five days now but otherwise doesn’t seem sick at all. Is otherwise alert, any advice is welcome.
Update: from the span of 8-10 weeks of age 5/6 of the birds died suddenly with no warning signs. The rest of my flock was fine and didn’t have any medical issues or warning signs of issues - still no sudden deaths since. One rooster is left from that purchase. Very strange coincidence.
Ordered six Amerucana chicks this year, good quality chicks, so far so good approximately four weeks old. I’ll definitely be ordering live chicks from now on if ordering from there.
I would try and treat for coccidiosis, if no improvement then I would assume Mareks. I would recommend sending the next bird (if any) who passes for a necropsy and PCR for Mareks to confirm if your flock is positive. If your flock is positive there's a lot of information of Mareks positive...
Looking for insight sexing this little one - is approximately 4 months old. No crowing or any typical “roo” behaviours. All photos of the same bird from today. Let me know what you think!!
Hello! This baby is 11 weeks old as of today! Barn yard mix from a pen of: amerucana, olive egger, black cooper maran, leg bar roosters & hens. I don’t recall what color egg it hatched from. Does not have the hairy leg gene. Looking for your thoughts on whether it’s a hen or roo!
