How can you tell that they will start laying? I'm interested to learn.
FYI: both of them were laying for 7-10 days before they were re-homed. Since then one has laid an egg but I'm not sure which. These both lay brown eggs, yes?

Ha, well, being completely new to this - they are "breeds" black, brown and white. I don't have any idea, but here is a recent picture. There were 4, but one was a rooster, so apparently he went to another home already. These 3 are hens and they are 5 months old.
