    Electric welded wire fence

Please do update, whether it works or not. I'd be interested to see how it all works out. I have changed my approach since this post was written. I keep my pigs (a relatively new addition to my farm), and my goats out in the main pasture together along with my LGD. I keep the chickens...

Comment by 'Gary Kenyon' in article 'The Myth of the 'Guard' Goose and Why You Should Not Get One'

So, a goose is smart enough to know that chickens aren't it's kind and will not protect them, but when mating season comes along, it'll mount up? When I compare this to your analogy about living with chimpanzees, I tend to think I would rather live in harmony and celibacy than bang a chimp.

    My new chicken trailer

The girls seem to like the new coop! This is, by far, the most eggs we have ever gotten in the coop! Maybe now we don't have to do the Easter egg hunts every day! Thanks again for everyone's input! 😊

I let them roost where they want. I added roosts in the trailer so that they would have the option of roosting there. So far, there are only a few laying inside and a couple laying under. Not sure if any are roosting inside or not. Time will tell.

Good to know. Maybe I will built another one some time. Thanks for the info.

The roosts I have now add up to 32 feet. If I add some in front of the nesting boxes I could add another 24 feet. Thank you for the feedback.

    My new chicken trailer

Yes, I already have them. I have had them for a little over a year. This cool is just a rebuild of the old one that was the same size. Several of them have been roosting about 20 feet off the ground in trees, so I am confident they can handle the 6 foot drop from the roosts I build. Maybe...

    My new chicken trailer

The floor is 84 square feet (12 X 7). There are two large (7 square feet) triangular openings at the top on each end covered with 1/2" hardware cloth for ventilation. Is that not enough? I'm not really sure where else I would add ventilation without creating a draft. As far as the nesting...

Also, you can't see them very well, but I put 8 small Cedar logs across the top of the coop to provide space for roosting. I don't think it is enough, but it is a start. I am considering adding roosts in front of the nesting boxes in Hope's of preventing them from roosting on the edge of the...

    My new chicken trailer

Good morning, everyone! So, I just finished building my new chicken trailer and thought I would share it with the group. It has 114 cubic feet of nesting boxes and two automatic feeders. It's 12 feet long, 7 feet wide and about 10 feet tall. I put a rain gutter on the low side of the roof...

    Electric welded wire fence

Thank you. That article was very informative. Kinda makes me think I am not crazy for thinking this should work. I agree that adding a small section of paneling around the bottom would help, however, I currently only have a little over an acre fenced in. I intend to fence in the entire 80+...

    Electric welded wire fence

I don't have any delusions of keeping my chickens flawlessly contained. These ladies have learned what their wings do and often fly up to perch on the automatic deer feeder I use for feeding them throughout the day (about 8 feet off the ground). I could clip their wings, but would prefer to...

    Electric welded wire fence

Thank you for your response. I have looked at the chicken netting you are talking about and I am worried about longevity. All of the netting I have been able to find is advertised at "temporary" and I am looking to fence in my entire farm (a little over 80 acres) then separate it into sections...

    Electric welded wire fence

I have been pretty fortunate with my goats. They seem to be content to just roam around in their pasture. They have tested out the electric fence a few times and I think they have resigned themselves to being contained. The chickens, on the other hand like to wander the entire farm in search...

    Electric welded wire fence

Thank you for the input. You have a good point about the leaves and stuff piling up. A typical electric fence would let them just blow through, while 2" x 4" squares would likely allow them to pile up. Maybe if I keep the fence a couple inches off the ground that would alleviate the problem...
