Hen laying on side breathing heavily

Sorry for not updating sooner but unfortunately she passed sometime overnight. She was gone when I went to put out fresh food and water this morning. I appreciate everyone’s help, and I’m so glad this heat wave is over.

No, there’s no natural shade. Like you, I covered half of the run with a tarp. I keep the food, water and coop on the shaded side so that they don’t get blasted by the sun all day. There are some trees nearby but they don’t provide much shade until about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Thanks for the...

Hen laying on side breathing heavily

The run is constructed entirely of chicken wire, so yes, it is as ventilated as it could possibly be. I do have electricity nearby so a fan would definitely be an option I could do. I put a shallow pool of water in the run and they were all very interested in drinking from it but none have been...

Hen laying on side breathing heavily

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it. I have been treating her this evening with cool water, both externally and trying to get her to drink a little bit. I had a small bowl that I placed by her head with cold water in it, and she did seem receptive to sticking her head in there a little bit...

Hen laying on side breathing heavily

Yes, she was healthy last night when she went to bed. I came out to give food and water this morning and did not have any unhealthy chickens at that time either.. when I returned home from work this afternoon was when I found her.

Hen laying on side breathing heavily

I couldn’t tell you for sure if she is currently laying or not. I’m getting 2-3 eggs per day from 7 chickens and I couldn’t say which are laying. I keep them in a run due to predators unless I am outside to supervise, and half of the run is constantly shaded. I have two water stations, both...

Hen laying on side breathing heavily

Hi all, hoping someone can help me out. One of my hens is not looking good. She’s laying on her side, and breathing heavily. It’s over 100 degrees here today, so I’m not sure if I’m dealing with a heat issue or an illness. I don’t see any droppings where she was laying. Don’t see any discharge...

Hen Unable to Move Unknown Cause

Well this morning I found that she had passed away overnight. Thanks again for your help! I guess the only thing to do now is keep an eye on the rest of the flock and make sure none of the rest suddenly develop the inability to stand.

Hen Unable to Move Unknown Cause

Thanks for your response! I have not noticed any issues as far as other hens that might have injured her. They all seem to get along relatively well outside of the normal stuff you might expect from a group of chickens getting their pecking order figured out. I do not own any roosters. I...

Hen Unable to Move Unknown Cause

Hi all. So yesterday evening I found one of my hens laying in between my run and the coop. I could tell right away something was wrong. I thought maybe she was stuck, so I gently removed her and placed her down out in the open, and immediately saw that she was unable to stand or move. I could...

    Help Identifying New Chicks

I’m not sure this friend is terribly knowledgeable about chickens for starters. I’m certain he didn’t intentionally dump anything undesirable on me. I live in a rural area where lots of folks have chickens. If worse comes to worse and I decide not to keep them I’ll rehome them.

    Help Identifying New Chicks

They were free from a friend who had some extras and asked if I wanted them. He told me they were hens but I was skeptical when I saw the combs.

    Help Identifying New Chicks

Hi all! I added some new chicks to my flock today, and was wondering if anyone could tell me what breeds they are. I was told that the black and white one is an Easter Egger but I’m not sure about the other two. I got the best pics I could at the time, but I will try to get better ones if they...

    Coop/Run Care

I don’t know what I would have done without zip ties. I bought the run from a farmer and he had used them too, so I figured if they were good enough for him they’d be good enough for me too. I have it half covered with a tarp just like you do yours. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to do...
