Topic of the Week - Incubating eggs

Couldn't agree more about "Hatching for Dummies!" I definitely meant to directly address cost: my Brinsea Ovation 56EX (true to the "56" for chicken eggs; 48 for duck eggs) was just under $500 after a coupon (bought it in November).

Topic of the Week - Incubating eggs

Following! I've used the Hova-Bator 1602N, Farm Innovators 4200, and Brinsea Ovation 56EX (review I wrote here if it helps). I am currently running all three right now (all other times were solo efforts), but I have to say, it's awfully nice and helpful NOT having to check the Brinsea four or...

Brinsea Improved and expanded Mini and Ovation incubators

Hi rasheika! I hope your hatch goes well! I would fill the second reservoir, making sure you have balled up paper towels or a small washcloth of something in there to serve as a wicking agent (if it's just water, it doesn't help the humidity as much; if it's soaked into something else, then it...

    First turkey eggs

I also have a pair of Bourbons - and I love them! Hannah just started laying at the end of February for me. Today I found her keeping the clutch of Buff Orpington [chicken] eggs warm while the other gals took a break!

    Duck egg advice!!

Congrats on your first duck eggs from your lady! That's awesome! :) When I ran my first duckling batch, it was half from my ladies and half from my friend's (whose flock we subsequently purchased when she downsized). My ladies were 0/29 and hers were just under 50% fertile. As I was reading...

    Duck egg advice!!

Morning! I also do not keep the humidity quite that high, although I think it depends on what type of incubator and air movement you have. I aim for about 50% (as 45-55% was recommended) in this incubator (Brinsea Ovation). The first round of ducklings had all fertile eggs survive to the...

    First turkey eggs

Morning! My hen also laid her first eggs recently (28 Feb). I generally tend to let the first few eggs go (just pull them without incubating) so that any possible "winter kinks" or issues are out of the way (for all of the poultry species here). That may easily not be recommended or possible...

    Brinsea Ovation Incubators - Anyone?

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to silence the alarm. I actually thought there was a way to do it, but I just skimmed back through the manual twice and couldn't find it. At least it'll keep reminding me to check it once in a while!

    Brinsea Ovation Incubators - Anyone?

Hey there! I'm on my phone, so forgive typos! My EX beeps every time it turns, so if your eggs are turning (mine are every 45mins), then that may be what you hear. Hope your day is going well!

    Brinsea Octagon or new Ovation

Hey there! Forgive me, in advance, as this is my first day posting in BYC (but I've used the resources countless times, so thank you!). I actually have the Ovation 56 EX and am on the third incubation already. I've really liked it, although there are a couple of things that have tripped me...

    Brinsea Ovation Incubators - Anyone?

Hi again! Awesome advice to know - thank you! I have to ask, if you don't mind: do you [so far] prefer the Octagon or Ovation? We almost got the Octagon and debated for months, but then the Ovation came out by the time we were going to break down and do it... If I'm on the wrong thread or...

    Brinsea Ovation Incubators - Anyone?

Hi Enggass! Hope you're having an awesome day, and I'm so stinking glad there was something I could offer that was of use to someone who knows all that you do! (And we are also getting Nigerians this year; can't wait!) Back to incubators... Yes, the problem with the reservoirs filling...
