I believe you are on the right path, as far as electrolytes, fan, and cool water. I change their water once in the morning and once in the evening after work. I have been seriously considering a fan. Makes you wonder how the pioneers and settlers made it without technology and yet here we are...
No, but I am about to...if he keeps trying to "get me" when I go to refresh water or gather eggs twice a day. I tell the wife, "the only reason he hasn't made it to the pot yet is because he is doing his job". Son-of-a-gun has survived an attack from 2 German Shepherds at the same time twice and...
Well, I initially wanted 4 Black Australorp Hens.
Ended up with:
4 Red Stars
4 White Leghorns
11 Black Australorps (1 Roo)
a mystery brown roo (wifes pet)
Mild but am seriously considering more so could get extreme
I have been working on PVC A-frame type tractors myself (2 of them). Once they are completed, I will post some pics. The only flaw in the PVC I can think of is how light they are. I have 3 German Shepherds, which if you know about shepherds, they are always "on" in one of three modes...
Being that 90% of soybean production is GMO, wouldnt the oil have the GMO label? For those wishing to keep to organic non-GMO standards, what are your opinions on this product? Just wondering.
I am in a similar situation. I have 19 birds. My plan is to make two tractors using PVC (keeps it light) and wire of course. Each will be large enough for 7 birds and will rotate the birds each day for ranging. I have a fenced yard strictly for the birds where the 10x12 coop resides. It is...
I would use pine shaving and stay away from hay for that purpose. I pick up a bale of it for under $5 at the local Tractor Supply. With my 10x12 coop it took 2 1/2 bundles for the initial 10-inch layer and regular monthly maintenence uses 1 1/2 bundles plus Diatamaceous Earth via a flour sifter...
I have five roosting bars spaced 14 inches apart and staggered (stair-stepped). This accomodates all 19 of my birds (2 roosters and 17 hens) with room to grow. The staggering allows them all to populate the roost without worrying about gifts from those above.
We have been considering raising rabbits for meat to suppliment the egg protein from our hens. My question is...what do you do with your hides from the rabbits?
Many thanks folks. He is a free chicken and because it was free I have no doubts it isnt a top quality bird. But he is the wifes "pet" and pleasing to look at. I have an Australorp roo for breeding replacement hens should the need arise. So the wife has her eye candy and my recommendation not to...
A good dusting with Diatamaceous earth will help control that. I keep a tub full buried at ground level for then them to bath in as they want. They also eat it (it's food-grade) which also helps with intestinal parasites. (I learned that on this site)
(edit: I also use it on my three German...
I have both breeds in my coop. The black one is a Black Australorp and the red one is a Red Star. Great birds and co-habitate well together. My Red Star's are the more adventurous off the two breeds. They seemed to be the first to do everything. The Australorps tend to be more friendly and more...
