I had 3 Silkie hens. One sadly died of fly strike. Then if the 2 left, 1 acted like she was going to kill the other. The bullied hen was broody. I finally separated them & they both seem perfectly happy in their own run & coop. The only upside was it knocked the broodiness right out of the...
I have Silkies & none of them will use an elevated perch. In their run is a long slatted bench, a slatted table & a big, 3 rung wooden ladder leaning against the run wall & secured with a bungee cord. They use all of the above. Their ramp to coop is wooden with wooden rungs about 3 “ apart.
My silkies will not use regular perches. Their favorite thing to perch on, if they perch at all, is a slatted long bench & a slatted square table. I tried all kinds of perches etc & they would not use them. They also love their dust bath.
I’ve had my girls for about 3 years now. I recently had 1 die of fly strike. By the time I realized what was happening it was too late. Such a horrible fate. That’s the first time I have dealt with any sickness or parasites ( knocking on wood). We have had alot of rain but runs are tarped &...
Thank you. I didn’t realize how attached you could get to them & the problems caused by the dynamic of the flock changing. They are currently separated. Luckily I had empty small omelet coop & run. They seem to be very pleased & don’t seem to miss each other at all. When the one gets over her...
Actually it started shortly before I lost the 3rd one but before she died she was acting odd. Lethargic & barely moving. I thought it was the heat. I may just separate the remaining 2 for a period & see what happens. I’m assuming introducing a 3rd would not work. Thanks.
Yes. Both hens. I have another coop & run I could put the bully in to separate them if that might be helpful. I assume I would later try to reintroduce them? Our temps are running in the 90s & we have had lots of rain, but runs are tarped & I have fans in the runs & I put ice in their water...
I have 2 Silkie/Easter Egger mixes. I had 3 but 1 fell ill several days ago & by the time I realized it had fly strike it was too late. Of the remaining 2, one is broody. Every time she attempts to come out of the coop (omelet coop) the other Silkie attacks her. I’ve been putting water in a...
I mix cayenne powder & red pepper flakes in with my chicken feed both are nutritious & birds cannot taste spicy. Some say it eliminates & controls worms.
