My Plymouth Rock took 23 weeks to lay their first eggs, one of the two Rhode Island Reds laid her first egg today at 24 weeks old, and the two Amercauna don't seem to be in a rush to start up their egg production. Lucky for them that they are so pretty!
One of the two Plymouth Rock laid her first (small) egg at 23 weeks old. The other Plymouth Rock laid her first egg two days later. Five days later, a Rhode Island Red joined them. We are still waiting for the first egg from the other Rhode Island Red and the two Ameraucana. All is good :-)
My chicks are 6 weeks old. They love being in the coop and spending time in the chicken run. I have the nesting boxes boarded off at the moment. How old should the chicken be when I open the nesting boxes up? - I have 2 Rhode Island Red, 2 Pymouth Rock, and 2 Easter Eggers.
Same thing happened to my chicks but they all got enough sleep to become healthy "pre-teens". I found it entertaining when they took a long time to fall asleep.
I have six chicks and they all did this to each other. Worse, sometimes one chick would jump right into the middle where three of them were already sleeping. Imagine how long it took for them to settle down! But without fail eventually all of them were sleeping peacefully.......until one of them...
The temporary brooder doesn't look all that shabby. The chicks seem to enjoy their new accomodations. It is certainly better than sitting at the post office.
These two Easter Eggers roosted on the skinny edge of the cardboard box. The following two nights they roosted on the bar in the top right corner of the photo. Then they moved outside into their coop. All good now :)
I just posted my experience with moving our chicks outside. I think some of these guidlines - like two days locked in the coop, heat requirements, etc. - are good but they are only guidlines and not rules cast in stone. My chicken went outside without a heat source at 4 1/2 weeks and seem to be...
My chicks will turn five weeks old next Tuesday. They have been in the chicken run during they day for a couple weeks now, because they love running around, scratching, and picking things up outside. While I love seeing them so happy when they first get to go outside, I think they did not like...
My 4-week-old chicks are pooping black poop, too, but I think that they have been eating too much dirt since I started to put them outside during the day.
