I took my now 10 wk old chick outside and made a temp. pen inside my chicken coop. This way they had to co-exist with the mature chickens i have. The chickens could not get to the chicks and at first stood there and looked at them but after about a week, i took down the temp. pen and they just...
My 2 week old EE chick has started to develop a crossed beak . Trying to figure out what to do, should i just keep her or should she be culled. I would hate to cause her distress. Pretty sure there is not anything to do for this deformity but don't want to make her life miserable.
I have made a saddle something similar to this one. However instead of stitching a band, I just took my polar fleece and cut holes for the wings to go in. No sewing project. Worked great and chickens didn't mind wearing them.
Thank you Casportpony, the article was very interesting. It could have very well have been this ascites. However, unfortunately my hen has passed. I went to check on her and she was gone.
I found my hen alone and in a corner of the coop. I thought maybe egg bound but I feel no egg, only kinda squishy, like filled with liquid. I have taken in the house and place her in a warm towel in a box sitting in near a heater. She was shaking a little when I found her. She will not drink or...
I have a bald eagle that live around me too, I caught him trying to take my goose decoy in my front yard, but he doesn't seem to bother my girls. But I only let them free range when after all the trees get their leaves to provide more cover for them if he is out
I use to have a problem with a coon trying to get to my hens, so I just called a friend that has several coon dogs and just so happened the dogs need some practice, ie no coons any more
Sounds like the rooster has found a new home. Sounds like the neighbors don't much care about the rooster anyway. But if he were causing so much distress to my new pullets he would have to go or I would have to build something to keep him in to keep him out of contact with the pullets.
When my chickens go broody and I want to break them, I usually only take them out of their nesting box and put them out in the run with rest of the girls. They don't like it and do return to the box(I do this a few times a day) but after a few days of disturbing them like this the stop.
I had a rooster die recently as well, although my hens did not stop laying, they were distraught over Toad's (rooster) death. Chickens mourn just like we do over a death, they will start laying again soon. They do stop laying when they are distraught or frightened, it does take awhile for them...
I have seen a few around my house also. I actually seen a bald eagle swoop down to take my goose (decoy). That would have been a very unappealing meal. I let my chickens out but I do have to watch them. I have also noticed that with the Baldy around the hawks seem to have disappeared for the...
Yes I can lock them up, but I really hate having to do that. Right now when I let them out I keep an eye on them and when I hear the roos start screaming I put them up. unless the roo has them hiding under my outside wood burner. Warm place to hide anyway. thanks for the responses. I just had to...
I do not usually have problems with mice, as my cats do hunt and my girls and the roos do like to catch them to. I try not to let them eat the mouse but they really do enjoy the challenge of catching them. Rather fun to watch. and I admittedly have no compassion for the mice, the are vermin and...
