Mama doesn't eat much when she is setting. Since you aren't seeing her drink, I think I would put the food away from her and closer to the water. She WILL eventually get up and eat, and she would probably get her a drink then. It is essential that they have water if they are eating.
Question on the advice to give more protien. To get above 16% I would have to get chick starter. Is that what you would recommend? Or just more of the 16%? I mix corn with their mesh for heat and to economize.
Me too. Out of 27 layers I have been getting from 4-8. I put their water on the heaters, and put their lights on timers so they are getting 14 hours of light. They are gradually starting to pick back up. Not sure if any of that made a difference. Today I got 14 eggs!! My older pen is not doing...
I moved part of my chickens to a new coop today. I am wanting to get them sorted out and see who is laying and who isn't. I have 20 hens and am only averaging 8 or 9 eggs. Anyway, my question is: How do I manage this situation? I free range, but I figure I will need to keep these ones penned...
Well, that is an interesting set up. The poop never hits the floor. We have always strived to make sure they couldn't poo on top of the boxes. Maybe I don't use enough hay, or/and, I never stir it. I am learning so much.
I am using hay because we have quite a bit of it. We use to have cattle and this is the leftovers from that era. Since it is free, that's why I have used it. I've never tried straw. So, it doesn't compact down like the hay? A bag of shavings around here is a little over $5.00. Not sure about...
Thanks for your imput. I bought some pine shavings today and put it in half of my "duplex". I like the looks of it. We'll see how it goes with my poopy hens in there. So, you just keep adding to it, right?
I have been using hay for the flooring of the hen house for years. It gets very compacted under the roosts (and smelly). And I clean it out when the smell gets too bad. I am getting ready to move into a new hen house and want to make sure what is best. I've been reading about the pine shavings...
My chickens love anything like that. I have never cooked it up special, but have too many leftovers. I don't know how often would be good for them, but they sure enjoy it. They like mashed potatoes and noodles, spaghetti, etc. I had a rooster get drunk off of some soured beans though. I thought...
When I was shucking my corn this year it seemed as though every ear had a worm in it. My chickens truly enjoyed that experience. One in particular (the one we call Baby) even learned to grab the worm off the ear of corn. I sure wouldn't cook them though.
I'm not sure that I can help you, but I can sympathize with you. I have 19 hens and I am only averaging around 10 eggs a day. Not satisfactory to me. I have Red Star and Black Star and they are advertised to be laying machines in the heat and cold, so not sure what is going on with them. I feed...
I just rehomed a rooster (Ralph, a Black Star) that was constantly attacking me. After forgetting to grab my stick, I lost a major battle Monday and have the bruises to prove it. I am so glad that we had trimmed his spurs, so there were just bruises and no blood. Anyway.... a neighbor supplied...
