About a week ago a police officer came to my front door and asked me if I had chickens, because he thought he had heard chickens clucking. I told him yes, that I had gotten an okay from the village clerk who said I could have them unless someone complained. I've had them almost a year and all...
Thanks for the recipe! I'll give it a try.
My chickens aren't really eating the suet very fast, but they are pecking away at it a little at a time. It's been so cold here (-33 degrees wind chill today) but their coop is heated a bit so it was just around freezing in there today.
I just came here to ask this very question, after the fact. We just put a suet cake in each coop. I would think it would be okay but just wanted to be sure.
When we had our first chickens we didn't have electricity in our hen house, and we didn't live on the property the farm was on. So we had to resort to other methods of providing light. We got one of those kerosene lanterns and filled, lit it and hung it every evening while we were doing...
Did it turn out to be a triple?? That is sure one huge egg!! Did it come from your RIR's? I see you have them listed as your signature! I get huge eggs from my Golden Comets. But never a triple (yet!!)
I wonder if it has anything to do with using styrofoam cartons. It seems to me that when I use the styrofoam cartons, they sweat so badly, I hate to use them. They seen to hold moisture so much. Maybe that could be a factor if you use them?
My Golden Comets lay a huge egg about every third or fourth day. They are always double, I can't wait to get a triple!! I put a hole in the back of each big egg and take the egg out (we eat them of course) and clean and save the shells, fill them with salt and seal the hole with candle wax. I...
pattycake, my chickens are this spring's chicks. The oldest ones are probably around 30 weeks old. Then a few are 29 weeks and a few are 27 weeks old. So their lack of laying shouldn't have anything to do with their age. I'll have to keep an eye on them next year tho and see how they do...
I scramble eggs with meat spots and feed them to the chickens, but I also crush up all the egg shells and mix them in with the scrambled eggs. I totally agree that I don't want my chickens eating eggs in the nest, so I don't feed them eggs as is. I always scramble them and break them up really...
Thanks for all your replies. I have noticed on days that are a bit warmer we seem to get more eggs...it was up to 80 degrees yesterday and today we have more eggs and they are bigger. I've noticed that on cooler days the eggs are smaller too. Not sure why or if it's just coincidence, but I do...
I have various breeds and wonder if this cooler weather we're experiencing is causing them to slow down on their laying. I was getting 10-11 eggs from my girls (11 of them) and suddenly we're lucky to get 6-8 eggs a day. They have lights on a timer in the coop, so the lesser daylight shouldn't...
When I got chickens, I wish someone would have told me they were soloud!!! I have no roos, but with these hens, who needs 'em?? They Bawk Bawk Bakawk so loud, I can't stand to be in the coop with them when they cut loose!! Don't let anyone tell you hens are quiet!!! They can be as loud as...
Beautiful eggs. I wish our EE's would lay bigger eggs. I have two black sex-links that are laying small eggs and have since they started laying a month ago. And all my EE's eggs are small. But then my Golden Comets' eggs are all huge, many double yolkers, also got one from my Buff Orp so...
