Surrogate OEG hatched peacock & keet

She hatched 1 peachick and 2 guinea keets yesterday. Problem is her nest box is about 3 feet above the ground. Bedded below it with lots of straw should the come tumbling out. Thinking I should take mom and the babies out of nestbox and puton ground all together in case someone doesn't leave...

    "Bantam" Coturnix Quail?

I hatched some eggs from a person who may have gotten their eggs from James Marie Farm. At three weeks, the little 'girl' is about 1/3 - 1/4 the size of the other quail. She is the normal wild color. At first I thought something was wrong with the tiny bird, but looks perfectly normal, eats...

Grrr... "Little Giant" Incubator 9200 fan addition

Yes -- doing that right now. Have some Coturnix quail eggs in there now with my old, but steady forced air Hova-bator sitting next to it with most of the eggs. Will see how hatch rates compare. At least the LG is holding temperature and I positioned the eggs in the center around the heating...

Grrr... "Little Giant" Incubator 9200 fan addition

Glad I'm not going totally crazy kuchchicks. I've even tried putting the fan at the bottom of the incubator and used carpet tape to hang in on the window away of the heating unit. All to no avail. Just because they almost give them away on Ebay, may try one of those .1 A computer fans to see...

Grrr... "Little Giant" Incubator 9200 fan addition

What was I thinking -- it must have been on sale. Anyway I already had two Hova-Bator Incubators, one old one with built in fan and another ancient one with just the thermo-disk heating element. Both give me decent hatches. So a few years ago I purchase the still air "Little Giant" 9200 with...

Fan making incubator too hot, what do I do?

Late replying to this thread, but just found it and I encountered the same problem. Have a Little Giant 9200 incubator and purchased a fan from "Happy-Farm" on ebay. Thought I was going crazy because after installing the fan the temperature would go up to way over 100 degrees and the...

    Feeding cull hens for freezer

You forgot the cayenne/ Cajun seasoning, that way they will have been wormed also. :)

    Feeding cull hens for freezer

I have some older (4-6 years ) hens which will be going in to the freezer this fall since it is not practical to feed them all winter (free ranging at the moment), when their egg production is declining. Seems to be a more practical feed than egg layer to fatten them up for this process...

    Little Giant 9200 GRRRRR...

I presently have two old Hova-bators (one forced air, one still air) chugging along and doing great. Since I needed to do some additional incubation, I pulled out a Little Giant 9200 and turner from my stash which looks like it has never been used. I then purchased a fan to add to it. I've...

Cost of feed for your area? per 50# bag

Well, I could drive a couple hundred miles for different brands. :) Last year I had a ton ground from a local person, but the cost of corn and additives is sending his costs thru the roof also, plus I have to store the ton in my tack room. It is really depressing since I like the chickens, but...

Cost of feed for your area? per 50# bag

I'm in the same boat. Purina is about the only brand available in this area. Can't believe the prices! With winter coming, just can't afford the feed anymore. I really need to get down to just 6 or so chickens, but oh, so hard to cull! Hate just to compost some of the girls, but no one will...

So how would you manage a problem skunk?

Lost 2 of my 3 guineas to some unknown predator two nights ago. Thought it may have been an owl since we have one in the creek behind the house and the guineas perch high. Set two live traps last night and a conibear. Surprise --two young skunks in them this morning. Since they were small...

Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

Got my first egg from a mixed flock acquired from My Pet Chicken. Believe it is the Barred Rock. Thought the Brown Leghorns might be first since they are really 'colored up'. 22 1/2 weeks. Thought that was pretty early for here in Montana. I did put a light in the coop about 3 weeks ago...

Do you use artificial lighting during the winter?

Any opinions on what type light is best - wattage? Incandescent or fluorescent bulbs ? Was thinking of using CFL to save on electricity.

How much is your production down?

Eight hens and haven't had an egg is 5 days. But they are molting and I will probably add a light shortly.
