Moving Broody Hens a couple miles to new home

We are being given some broody hens because their behavior doesn't work in the current environment. We will have them in a separate living area with nest buckets and nice space. I have a couple questions to get off to a good beginning. Will moving them a couple miles likely mess with their...

    Mixing Chicks of Different Ages

We have 12 grown hens laying in a larger house and run. The 'brooder' house is smaller --,maybe 5x5 with a 6x15 run. The babies stay in a masonite circle until they are big enough to try to get out of it. there are 27 babies at the moment.

    Mixing Chicks of Different Ages

Every thing appears to be working. The 3 day old chicks and the 4 week old chick spent two nights together. yesterday, when the door was opened for feeding, the bigger chick got out. Ir's been used to being outside so we left him run with food and water outside. Last night, we caught it in...

    Mixing Chicks of Different Ages

Your story of mixing chicks is so encouraging. We have had a rotten (pun intended) experience hatching our own eggs. Twice the hens had nests of 12+ eggs. First time one hatched with 5-6 started and died in-egg. 2nd time 2 hatched with 4-5 dying in-egg while other eggs were just nothing...

    Broody Hen Thread!

We had a young hen go broody. We moved her and several eggs to a separate secure building where she has next box, good and water. She went nuts and stopped brooding. The cats got a bunch of eggs. Now, another one is broody -- 3 days and pecking us. But, she keeps moving from nest box to...

Question to those that feed their chickens eggshells back to their chickens.

I save all eggshells and put some on garden or flowerbeds. When that is covered, I give them back to the hens -- just let them dry and crush them. If we get more than 4 eggs, the cats expect one. The hens are watching when I open an egg for the cats on the grass and expect me to toss the...

How to make your chicks not scared of you

We cuddled right away too. We would put feed in our hands and they would come to get it. They also liked shiny things and would peck fingernails and rings. As grown-ups. they have no fear and little respect (rooster could use a little fear)

Eggs don't grow closed, but have a hole at the pointy end

Thank you for that idea. I will ask him. We do have some calcium added to the layer feed, so if they get extra, that might be the explanation.

    Aussies rule at our house

We have a small flock of black australorps -- 20 hens and 1 magnificent rooster named Jasper. We bought 25, got 26, ate 3 roosters and had two hens die. They will be 2 years old this summer. They are picking up on the laying for the season, with 14 brown eggs yesterday, eleven the day before...

Eggs don't grow closed, but have a hole at the pointy end

A neighbor stopped by yesterday and told us he has cinnamon sexlinks and turkeys which lay eggs that don't close. There is a little hole in the point end of the egg. He has other chickens that are fine and feeds the same layer feed to all (and is the same local brand that we use.) What would...
