I just got Susex this year too for the first time, I hatched others half Barred Rocks and half RR ect. Last May 2013 and they didn't start g until March 2014 so me personally I won't count on any eggs until next year. But keep an eye on their wattles as they mature enough they should get darker...

Poles should be fine because they are not in constant contact with them on their feet, don't use cedar shaving for any animals the oil in the shavings is harsh on their flesh. Pine shavings are best. Some people like hay or straw for bedding, straw & hay is messy.
JackE I agree 40 is warm, most of the fowl should do fine at least until 30 degrees, when you get a wind chill in the teens or below I feel for them especially my old girls and you can see that they appreciate the warmth when it gets too cold.

I use a simple house old 100w light bulb in a heat lamp fixture and plug it into a timer set to be on at 5am and off about 10 pm the latest, this way they can stay just warm enough and it keeps the egg production up and not stress them,
