Plants not safe for chicken consumption?

Bought Autumn sage from Lowes and didn't realize it said not for human or animal consumption. I bought the sage for the chickens so it's a bummer. Does anyone know what makes it so that it is not safe for consumption? Is there anything I can do to make it safe for the flock? Thanks in...

Extreme Heat Wave - Formex Snap and Lock Chicken Coop

I should have mentioned that the garage gets very hot too and lacks the proper ventilation so I opened the garage door and side door for airflow and ventilation. A few of them were on and off panting so I made the move to their brooder with another fresh bowl of ice water. Thanks for your help!

Extreme Heat Wave - Formex Snap and Lock Chicken Coop

Thanks so much for the advice. Got it! I'm glad that you mentioned that training them this way is erroneous. A lot of people do that and I was surprised how readily people recommend this practice. It seems to have worked for many others although it kind of felt cruel to keep them locked up in...

Extreme Heat Wave - Formex Snap and Lock Chicken Coop

Hello, everyone! I have a question regarding extreme heat temperatures during the training period for the chickens. The chickens are 8 weeks old and are on Day 2 of being confined in their coop before being released into the run (in the process of being built.) Temperatures are reaching 105...

Do you keep food and water in coop?

Got it! Great advice. Thank you. There should be enough ventilation and space for the water and food, although I am already expecting the mess that comes with it 😂 They're very eager to move out of the dog crate and it's about to get real hot out here in the next few days so it's perfect timing...

Do you keep food and water in coop?

Hello! New chick mama here. My almost 8 week olds are ready to move into their coop and run by the end of the week. Do you have any pointers to keep the flock destressed during the process? I have read some people keep the chicks in the coop for 24 hours before opening the door to the run. Do...

Concrete Sand: Crushed Clayton Blue Rock for Chicken Run?

Hello, I have reached out to nearby quarries for river sand or bank run sand. One company got back to me saying they have a manufactured sand from crushed clayton blue rock which they import from Hansen Quarry. (Nor Cal area) I'm not familiar with what this all means (see picture below) but it...

    Hello! BYC Introduction

Hello, Community! My name is Eleanor and my husband, son, and I live in Nor Cal. Honestly, I still have a lot to learn. I feel semi-new to chickens. I've had 5 in the past (1 pair and then 3 when I was a young child.) I currently have a flock of 5 chicks as of now, currently 6 weeks old. I...
