I was going to treat my hens with piperazine dihydrochloride 53% as a preventative deworming measure as we head into Spring. I have since noticed that at least one of my girls is having a respiratory issue (they have some different diagnoses that make them more susceptible to infections). After...
Unfortunately tiamulin/tiaguard isn’t available in Canada without a vet prescription. Can’t order tylosin through Jedd’s either. I honestly think it’s some kind of legal loophole that allows people to order the 4-in-1 because I can’t order just tylosin despite it being an active ingredient in...
I have seen a few posts/threads where chicken keepers use this All in One Powder for coccidiosis, canker, worms, and and respiratory issues. I know that it's application for chickens is technically off label, but this product and every equivalent I can find says not to use on livestock whose...
This is pretty much where I have landed too. I've been really hesitant about leaving supplemental heat running in their coop unattended, and also don't want them to get acclimatized to a warmer temp but I have taken to leaving the panel on during these -20 degree nights (like I said, it...
Yes, I haven't been touching their combs since noticing.
Everybody is looking good now, although we have more subzero nights on the horizon. Fingers crossed!
Oh, that is good to know! I was under the impression that they offered a protective barrier. I wasn't going to reapply it, because I know the effected tissue would be really sensitive but now I know it's not worth it in the first place...
It has been really cold here for the past few days, like -20C overnight. I have done everything I can think of to prevent frostbite. Their enclosed run is wrapped in wind-proofing plastic, I've been adding vaseline to their combs before they go to roost in the evening, and I've had low-level...
I have noticed what looks like a lot of intestinal lining shed in the droppings under my hens' roost this morning, as well as this weird green mess... One of my hens has been broody recently but spent last night on the roosting beam, so I would assume this stinky pile came from her, but the sort...
In a similar situation ❤️🩹
We lost six of our eleven hens. Went through a whole slew of health issues one after the next (seriously, dealt with almost every kind of health concern over the course of the first year). Before learning that Marek's, lymphoma, and the subsequent immunity...
I personally haven't had any success with this method. Hopefully one day I will be confident enough in handling them that I can smoothly administer a pill or syringe directly, but have had a lot of trouble with it so far.
At the moment, I'm giving calcium citrate in the form of a crushed pill, but the question was meant to be more general.
The last hen I had to treat in this way took the crushed pill in a bit of egg yolk or mash easy-peasy every time, but the one I'm treating now has been a lot more picky. So...
