    Quail predators !

Ditto on James statement. Raccoons tend to run in groups. I have had six or more in my barn at one time. When I fixed the pens so they couldn't reach them, they started tearing feeders apart and eating bird food. They are tough ones to deal with. I am building another barn to put my cages in..

    My War with cats.

I think they should be relocated but at the local animal shelter. There is a chance they will be microchipped and the cat could be reunited with the owner and usually with a hefty fine. This discourages the owner from allowing them to roam. If they are feral they will be destroyed and usually...

3 day old Texas A&M quail keep pecking and killing each other

I agree with buttonquailtx, when I use white light my white birds will deflesh each other. Just switching to a red light calms them greatly. They become very docile almost instantly. It was a hard lessons to learn.

do boy button quail lay eggs

Strangely your question is not silly at all. In most birds with a few exceptions, males have two testes and females have only one ovary. In rare occasions females may develop a small testi because of a hormone imbalance. These hens may begin to crow and this condition does not impede the laying...

    Releasing Quail

One thing people do not often consider is the potential effect of release of pen raised birds on the wild population. Often domesticated birds have viruses that have mutated in different strains than in wild birds which can be potentially fatal to wild birds. There is also a problem with released...

    Quail Question

My birds are on wire and just drop eggs wherever, I have heard others comment that if your birds are on wire and you give them a sand box to dust in they will tend to lay in the sand box. I've tried that but it doesn't seem to make any difference with mine.

Who's bought eggs from James Marie' s in the fall?

I bought 100 from him last early winter. 50 A&Ms and same number of his James Marie meat birds. Received 104 eggs, hatched 80. 40 of each type. They grew fast didn't loose one till butcher time, kept half of each for breeding. I am very happy with these birds.

what type of feed do newly hatched quail eat?

Oh I heartily agree, just mentioning that they will need smaller pieces. There's more than one way to skin a cat, I just happen to have an old coffee grinder that we weren't using for anything else, plus I can make lot of chick feed quickly in one sitting. I used to do things like using a jar...

what type of feed do newly hatched quail eat?

I agree with the high % protein. 30 is best if you can get it. I raised a batch on 24% and a batch on 30%. Out of the same hatch and the difference in how fast they matured was very marked. The 30% birds were several days ahead and at butcher time about two weeks ahead of the 24% birds with both...

First time going on lockdown tonight with a question on humidity

I have two incubators with the exact same box just different heating and fan systems. One has a larger fan than the other. The one with the larger fan I can add 5 cc's of water and raise the humidity ten percent, the other commercial type heater and fan won't go over sixty five no matter what I...

Hello and where do you folks buy your quail eggs?

I don't believe you'll go wrong with James Marie. If you follow accepted guidelines for incubation you'll get at least a reasonable hatch and he is quite knowledgeable. He also keeps a great line of A&M's.

This has probably been debated before, but I couldn't find a thread....

I vote quail. I raise both and love both especially the beauty of chicken roos. But, production wise the quail way out perform chickens. I have to feed a chicken six months before eggs start to show, quail six weeks on average. By the time my chicks start, the quail will have laid four months...

    maturing coturnix

Another update, finally the last batch of hens have started to lay. These are very large birds, even larger than the A&Ms that started laying as of the last post. Size is the only factor different, so I am Assuming that's the deciding factor. I have decided these will be my meat type birds, I'll...

    maturing coturnix

Update, one week later, several males are now crowing, but still no eggs. Just one or two in the A&Ms. I may not have many hens in the A&Ms. So far I have banded 18 cocks out of 38 birds and several that are left are small bird so I am afraid they are cocks. In the other batch that are not A&Ms...
