@JennyHeidewald
So how was your hatch rate? I'm Marek's positive around here, so I read lots of info.
(Everything I can find.)
I *think* I want to order some Chinese Skullcap since I've got a fresh hatch in my basement. The first one emerged on March 25th.
Yep. It's Marek's.
I sent off 2 pullets for testing, a Bielefelder and a Black Australorpe, both 9 months old. I'm not sure why they stopped short of doing an actual PCR test (or is it PRC?) because it seemed like that was available from what the report said.... but all the findings...
What is AI? <late edit> nevermind, I found it. Avian Influenza.
I assume MD in this context is Marek's Disease.
Yep. I've watched some Necropsy videos now. Thanks for the encouragement, @amarsano
Gulp. Time to do some unpleasant duties, to find out what I'm up against.
Backyardchickens.com...
Ok. Now, I do think this IS likely Marek's. But I can't see driving 4-5 hours round trip, and dropping $105.00 for a necropsy....a process that will undoubtedly "put me on a list" that I do not wish to be put on.
I've thought about trying it myself. A necropsy, I mean. My own DIY version, with...
Don't know. This Bielefelder batch were hatchery chicks that I purchased from a farm show type of event. The Australorpes were from Atwoods.
I'm planning to hatch my next chicks like I did 2 years ago. None of those were vaccinated.
Do the symptoms sound like Marek's?
Sick Chick #1
I have a VERY LETHARGIC 9 month old Bielefelder pullet that has been separated in a dog crate inside our house for almost a month. She's getting worse, and now she won't eat. I suspected a large parasite load, since while I was holding her on my lap, a couple of tiny critters were...
@ No coop no problem:
(What is the meaning of "SOP" in your previous post? I thought in the 1st example you might've meant Standard Operating Procedure, but in the 2nd one, that didn't seem to fit. :hmm)
I have a sick 8 month old Bielefelder pullet and I'm worried about Bird Flu. She's been...
This will only be my 2nd Winter as a Chicken Keeper. So there's that.
I lost all of my first batch to predators, mostly...but EXTREME hot weather played a role in 2 more hens untimely deaths. They were around a year and a half old, and were just a barnyard mix. Prolific layers, and VERY...
I guess I don't have my phone set up correctly to receive notices of replies. I missed your's FrostRanger!
I did indeed lose another hen. So that's 2 since the weather turned hot.
I contacted a vet that does the poultry for a vet clinic in Stillwater, OK. He gave me some advice, but...
I did not follow up with this thread but now I need to. I didn't happen to write down the date, and I don't remember. But this hen did in fact not survive.
She carried on for another three or four weeks with various eggshell anomalies, then one day she refused to eat, and stayed inside the...
Ok. Here is yesterday's egg on the left and today's egg on right.
We don't have a vet locally who does poultry. I intend to check for other symptoms of Mycoplasmos myself, but not til tomorrow.
Grandpa-ing today til 4 and THEN orchestra rehearsal at church. It will be pretty late in the day...
azygous, I was busy doing garden stuff and didn't look for replies until just now. This hen isn't old at all. We hatched her 13 months ago today, as a matter of fact.
Perris, there are 2 eggs in the 5th picture you linked on the right edge (center and one egg lower) that look very much like...
One of my hens is pretty consistently laying an egg with a weird big end. 2 days ago it was perfect, but then today's offering was her worst effort yet.
It's rough, discolored and sometimes a bit misshapen, even slightly pointy. It's been going on a couple of weeks at least. Never anywhere...
Temps are all over the place. We hit 86° F @2PM yesterday, and by 6AM this morning 21° F.
Yes. A 65° F drop in 16 hours.
CRAZY!
One windy, HORRIBLLY cold day I let them out and got one hen and my older Rooster (who recently became UNalived by a raptor) :( frostbitten combs and wattles. I...
