I've got 6 chicks in an outside brooder - they are ~3 weeks old. It hits mid-high 90's during the day but down to mid-low 70's at night. I plug the heat lamp in before going to bed and unplug it at sunrise. At what point should they be fine without supplemental heat at night?
The brooder is...
Only the original 3 still. Hen will go out with the chicks when they go out but still goes back to sit on the eggs... not confident any more are going to hatch though.
She was out in the pic. She looked like she was really struggling (its ~100 degrees) so we got her to drink some water and she was hanging with the two hatched chicks. After she got a good drink she went back to sitting on the rest... its been ~20 minutes and it looks like she's still sitting...
Thanks! I built a little box and put it over where she got broody on the eggs. So far 3 have hatched (1 died) and she is eating and drinking. I’ll just leave them be for a while. Hoping she’s goes back to sit on the rest.
First chick just hatched. I removed some eggs I could tell weren't viable over the last bit, but some were too dark to candle. How long do I give it to see if any eggs will hatch before removing them all?
Can anyone identify the breeds of chickens these are? They were free so didn’t ask too many questions.
Pretty sure the two white ones are hens but the yellow may be a rooster (couldn’t get a pic but it looks like saddle feathers are coming in).
Thanks! I think it's been two nights but can only confirm last night. They've got an automatic door to the run so unless I hear a chicken screaming they're pretty much left alone. She was out for a bit this morning, but has been sitting on the eggs all day.
Thanks again! That is good to...
So she's definitely sitting on the eggs. All my other hens laid eggs yesterday in the coop so I don't think there'll be anymore.
Tried candling last night but couldn't see much, I'm hoping its just very early... maybe by the weekend I can see something. My understanding is that it is unlikely...
My hens have a coop/run but also free range the surrounding area most of the day. I don't particularly pay attention to what they're doing unless egg production drops or something out of the ordinary occurs. Recently we've had a reduction in eggs laid in the coop but not zero so I just assumed...
Thanks! I'll get my info updated - but I'm in south Texas, about an hour north of San Antonio.
The hen was fine; there's plenty of trees to roost in.
3 hens and 1 rooster... had an owl cut my numbers in half over the winter until I figured out it wasn't racoons. They are all about 1 year old...
My chickens have a ~140 sqft run with the coop. They typically roost in a big cedar inside the run rather than the coop. I just recently installed an automatic door to outside the run. The hens took to it right away and began free ranging (took them a day or so to figure out the only water is...
