    Most important aspect of butchering?

Thanks for the encouragement. It did my soul good to say all those words and I think it really is an important part of the process. I didn't imagine the emotions that were involved until we went thru it. I do feel better today and know we will keep on raising our own chickens.

    Most important aspect of butchering?

We just had our 18 Cornish x butchered yesterday. My daughter and I decided to stay and watch the process and learn as much as we could. She was involved with much more of the process than I could. I did find it interesting and felt so good about the way the process went. The young men were...

    Mysterious death

I am so sorry for both of your losses. What does sour crop look like? I came home last night, after work, and found one of my girls ( less than 2 years old, Black barred rock) dead out in the run. I checked her over, didn't see anything. no signs of fighting, she was just laying there. I am...

What to use out in the run?

I won't tell you what it cost to fix our "muddy run" problem, but I do admit I love seeing the girls out in the run now and not getting their feet all muddy and right now full of snow. We live in central NY and we have lots of snow now and rain in the spring. Last year we tried tarps, forget...

    Lighting in winter

I want to thank you all for these ideas. I have been trying to figure out how to light the run so that I can go down and feed and check on the girls at 6:30 am before we go off to work. It has been so dark now I can't clean and get around very well. So last night when we got home from work...

Tell How Predators Got Your Chickens. Save Somebody Else From The Bad Experience

I remember reading somewhere in here last year, no matter how safe your coop and run are, preditors can still find a way in. I didn't mean to be smug, but I thought, nope not mine, they are safe. Well, I did learn no matter how safe, preditors can and will find a way in. We have a 10x30...
