I live in northern BC and read about these in Small Farm Canada. Where can you get hatching eggs or chicks?

Can you use (spruce) mulch for bedding?

We just bought a small chipper and it makes great mulch out of our crabapple branches. But what I am wondering, is if I could mulch a bunch of dry spruce branches to this size as well and use it for bedding in the coop, before it goes to a compost pile? They still have the needles on them...

Do chickens eat ants or do they avoid them?

Update: When my hens started laying, they started gobbling up every creature that would fit in their beaks. Ants included.

    Olive oil and rose hips?

Sorry, but I just saw this reply now. Thank you for responding, and I will get the bag out of the freezer tomorrow to start giving them their treats. Probably a better time of year for it anyhow. :)

Topic of the Week - When Do Pullets Begin Laying?

We have two Rhode Island Reds and two Barred Rock, and they were all born on April 19. The smallest one, which is a Rhode Island, started laying on August 18, and I did notice her squatting, but was unaware that it meant she would start laying. The other three, which are much larger than her...

    Olive oil and rose hips?

We make soap, and one of our bars is for sensitive skin and it's made with infused oils like rosehip and chamomile. Our chickens love rosehips, as they have stripped the rose bush in the back yard of it's fruit as soon as they could get to it, but I'm wondering if giving them the mash after we...

My 10 week old Barred Rock ate an 8" bead of silicone

Yeah, I don't know where it came from, unless it was on some reclaimed lumber from the landfill and she tore it off. The weird thing is that I have red wigglers and European nightcrawlers and they won't even touch them. Thanks, I have a bin of it that I throw their feed into, just to make sure...

My 10 week old Barred Rock ate an 8" bead of silicone

I saw her fighting with what I thought was a snake, when I realised that she was eating it. As I got closer to the tractor, I saw that it wasn't a snake at all, but a long bead of silicone. I'm not sure where it came from, but as I chased her around trying to get it out of her throat, she...

Do chickens eat ants or do they avoid them?

I just got my first two pullets and they don't touch them. I watched a few running all over the side of the run and they didn't even peck at it. They will crazily chase a fly though, so I don't know what the deal is. From what I've read, some love them, some don't bother.
